Fish and Wildlife has a special study underway to eradicate feral pigs in a portion of the Desert Wildlife Unit. WDFW to begin prescribed fires in March
SPOKANE – Annual prescribed fires on Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife-managed lands in Eastern Washington are scheduled to start in March, as conditions allow, according to a Thursday announcement from the WDFW.
License fee increases possible
Fish and Wildlife has scheduled six public workshops in early August for the public to comment on the department’s proposals to expand conservation programs and provide more fishing and hunting opportunities through a combination of state funding and license fee increases.

Charles Pool
Charles Pool, 71, (Ernie to most, Chuck to his siblings), went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, with his loving family surrounding him, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ernie was a longtime resident of Moses Lake. He was born on Dec. 4, 1936, in Colville, Wash., to John and Gladys Pool. They moved to Selah, Wash., where Ernie went to school and graduated from high school in June 1955. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served from June 1955 to September 1975. Ernie worked as plant manager at Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake, Wash., for 16 years, then came to Moses Lake to work at Basic American Foods for nine years before retiring. His hobbies were spending time with his grandchildren, family genealogy, fishing, and he was a Nascar racing fan. He was a member of the Moses Lake Church of the Nazarene.

Jon Anderson
Jon Alan Anderson, 69, of Moses Lake passed away Dec. 15, 2022, at Sacred Heart Medical Center. Jon was born Dec. 21, 1952, in Richland, Washington to Leonard and Ann Anderson. Jon was active in sports, particularly basketball. Jon graduated from Richland High School in 1971 and played NJCAA basketball at Blue Mountain Community College, Pendleton, Oregon as well as Lethbridge College, Lethbridge, Alberta. Jon graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1976. After graduation, he was employed by the Washington State Potato Commission. In 1979 Jon was employed by Western Kraft as a box salesman, moving to Moses Lake. He continued and thrived in the industry until his retirement as senior account executive from International Paper. Upon retirement Jon established his own corrugated container brokerage, Pend Oreille Packaging.
New bridges at Rocky Ford Creek make great stretch of trout water safer
EPHRATA — Access to one of the best fisheries in central Washington just got a little safer with the installation of two new foot bridges to the trails on both sides of Rocky Ford Creek, a fly-fishing holy water north of Moses Lake, at both the upper and lower ends near Trout Lodge fish hatchery.
March 1 opener a week from today
A week from today, Friday, March 1 at midnight, the March 1 opener will begin. This is the first of several fishing opening seasons in the Columbia Basin.
Annual MLIRD Kid's Fishing Derby tomorrow, April 12
The Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District will host the Fifth Annual Kid's Fishing Derby at Connelly Park tomorrow, April 12, for youth ages 5 through 14. Weinstein Beverage and Pepsi also sponsor the event.
March 1 openers in sight
We are lucky in the Columbia Basin to have lakes and streams open to fishing 365 days a year. We also have lakes which are open only during part of the year. The first opener will take place a week from tomorrow and is known as the March 1 opener.

George E. Duncan
George E. Duncan, 61, passed away on April 20, 2007, in Othello. He was bom on April 29, 1945, in Durango, Colo., to Ed and Louise Garcia Duncan. He lived in Durango until age 4. The family moved to Buhl, Idaho, then on to Burley, Idaho, where George graduated from high school in 1963. He joined the Idaho National Guard when he was 17 and remained in the National Guard until 1970. In 1970 George moved to Othello, where his parents had relocated several years earlier. He attended Eastern Washington State College at Cheney and received a Bachelor of Science at Central Washington College at Ellensburg. He also had a pharmacy technician certification. George received his teaching credentials and substituted in many area schools and had various other jobs. He was active for many years in the Nazarene Church youth group. George enjoyed fishing, golf, reading, bowling, playing cards, country western music and watching western movies. He especially enjoyed spending time with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. George is survived by his loving wife Karen Larson of 8 years; his three sisters Liz (Tom) Ferguson, Othello; May Duncan, Vacaville, Calif.; and Loretta Torres of the Tri-Cities; and one brother David (Peggy) Duncan, Moses Lake; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Lee. Memorial Services will be held at the Othello Nazarene Church in Othello on Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name are suggested to the Diabetes Association or the Othello School District. Lake Roosevelt walleye fishing heats up after the spawn
Lake Roosevelt walleye are spreading out after the spawn and according to Fish and Wildlife the fish are hungry. Remember, on Lake Roosevelt the daily catch limit is eight walleye and there is no minimum size, although only one over 22 inches may be retained.
