Bird likely cause of Moses Lake outage
MOSES LAKE — A bird that got too close to electrical wires apparently triggered a power outage in the Wheeler Road area that lasted about two hours Thursday morning. “A bird touched an energized component in the (Wheeler substation) while also in contact with a grounded component. This caused a distribution fault and the protective relay system operated to interrupt and clear the fault,” wrote Christine Pratt, PUD public information officer, in reply to an email from the Columbia Basin Herald. The outage occurred about 8:30 a.m., and electricity was restored about 10 a.m.
GCSO on scene at Saturday evening Mae Valley collision
MOSES LAKE – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office and cooperating agencies have responded to a collision near the intersection of Road 4 NE and Road E NE near Mae Valley, according to GCSO Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman. The collision involved a passenger car and a semi. One occupant of the car likely has a fractured leg and has been taken to the hospital for treatment. GCSO expects to have the roadway cleared within 90 minutes and the road is not considered a major thoroughfare, so no emergency notification was sent out to the public via Nixle, Foreman said.

WARDEN – Warden High School’s Kiana Rios (32) drives past a Colfax player during the state championship game of the WIAA state 2B girls tournament on March 5, 2022. The Cougars went on to win the championship that year and Rios went on to graduate and play for Saint Martin’s University. During her time with the Saints, Rios played in all 26 games for the 2022-23 season, starting 22 of those games and averaging 29.3 minutes per game and averaging 11.8 points, according to Saint Martin’s University Athletics. She also averaged 4.2 rebounds per game and 1.7 assists.

Royal grad heads to USU
LOGAN, Utah — A Royal High School graduate has been accepted to Utah State University, according to a press release from the university. Avery Andersen, a 2022 graduate of RHS, will begin her higher education in the fall 2022 semester, attending at the USU main campus in Logan. Since its founding in 1888, Utah State University has evolved from a small-town college tucked away in the northern Utah mountains to a thriving research university respected around the world, the release said.
Moses Lake woman dies in rollover
MANSFIELD — A Moses Lake woman is dead after a single-vehicle accident early Saturday morning, according to a press release from the Washington State Patrol. Stephanie M. Starkweather, 35, was driving south on state Route 17 about 15 miles south of Mansfield in a 2005 Dodge Magnum at about 2 a.m. when she failed to negotiate a curve. Her vehicle left the roadway, rolled multiple times down an embankment and caught fire, according to the WSP. Starkweather died at the scene. It was unknown whether drugs or alcohol was involved, or whether Starkweather was wearing a seatbelt, the WSP wrote.
Pasco man injured in Mattawa collision
MATTAWA — A Pasco man was transported to Kadlec Medical Center in Kennewick after he failed to negotiate a roundabout near Mattawa and ran off the road Tuesday morning. Roy Limon, 80, was attempting to go through the roundabout at the intersection of State Route 243 and Government Road about 5:30 a.m. when he ran off the road, according to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol. Limon’s car came to a stop in a ditch on the southbound side. Limon was not wearing a seatbelt, the WSP memo said. The collision is still under investigation...
