Cougars head to NCAA Championships in Eugene
PULLMAN — The Washington State Track and Field programs will send four members to the 2024 NCAA Track and Field Championships, June 5-8, in Eugene, Oregon. Competing for the Cougars will be decathlete Lee Walburn, shot putter Nana Gyedu and 100m hurdlers Maribel Caicedo and Micaela De Mello.

MOSES LAKE — All of a sudden, serious summer is supposed to show up, just in time for the weekend. Jeremy Wolf, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Spokane, said temperatures in the Columbia Basin will warm up fast as the weekend approaches. Wednesday’s high is forecast to be 77 degrees.
Grant PUD meets most 2023 financial targets
EPHRATA — The Grant County PUD expects to finish the buildout of its fiber network in 2024, along with a project to upgrade some of its transmission, distribution and substation components.That was among the information included in the PUD’s annual report, released Monday. The PUD met most of its financial targets in 2023, according to the report.
Pharmacists prove effective, less costly care option for minor illnesses
SPOKANE. — Greater use of pharmacists to treat minor illnesses could potentially save millions of dollars in health care costs, according to new research led by Washington State University. The findings also indicate a way to improve healthcare access by expanding availability of pharmacists’ clinical services including prescribing medications, amid an ongoing shortage of primary care providers.
Three Wildcats earn GNAC awards
PORTLAND, ORE. – Central Washington’s Johan Correa, Isabella Haarer and Emy Ntekpere earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference awards on Friday, with Correa winning the Male Athlete of the Year award, Haarer winning the Female Newcomer of the Year award and Ntekpere winning the Female Freshman of the Year award.
WA Health Authority launches addiction program
OLYMPIA – According to a Monday release from the Washington State Health Care Authority, the organization is launching a program that expands access to medications for opioid use disorder - also known as MOUD. The program, ScalaNW, equips emergency room clinicians with tools to treat patients for opioid use disorder, or OUD, and connect them to community-based care.
USDA wildfire plan issued
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland issued Monday a joint memo to federal agency leaders with wildfire responsibilities outlining their vision and goals for managing wildland fires this year, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

WDFW continues pygmy rabbit management
OLYMPIA — The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking public comment on an updated recovery plan for pygmy rabbit populations in Central Washington. The “draft status report” recommends keeping the rabbits on the state’s endangered species list. Comments will be accepted through Aug. 27.

However, teachers certified to provide these services are in short supply, partially due to a lack of flexible options for getting those certifications.
