New WA law granting unemployment benefits to striking workers draws praise, concern
(The Center Square) – Depending on who you ask, Engrossed Senate Bill 5041 – signed into law by Gov. Bob Ferguson earlier this week – is either a much-needed social safety net for workers and their families or something that will incentivize and prolong strikes and imperil Washington state’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. ESB 5041 extends unemployment insurance benefits to striking or locked-out workers in Washington. Depending on the strike date, benefits would start 15 to 21 days after the strike begins. If the contract is resolved before that time, no benefits would be issued. Per the bill, striking workers would be able to access unemployment benefits for up to six weeks. Sen. Marcus Riccelli, D-Spokane, is the sponsor of the bill.
Tigers hire new dance coach for 2025-26
EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers have hired Melody Davis as the new head coach for the EHS Dance team for the 2025-26 school year. Davis is from Selah and has had an accomplished career both in the WIAA and professionally with the NBA. “Melody is an outstanding addition to the EHS athletic program,” said Bryan Johnson, EHS Athletic Director. “She brings not only an elite-level performance experience but also a deep understanding of coaching, choreography and mentorship. We’re incredibly fortunate to have her.” Davis said she had initially started her athletic career with gymnastics when she was growing up, but as she got older found dance an outlet where she was able to better express herself.

COLUMBIA BASIN — The spring sports season concludes this weekend as two local baseball teams make their push for a state title. Columbia Basin track teams will also compete at their state meets this week starting Thursday.

MOSES LAKE — Communities across the Basin bowed their heads, removed their hats and paid tribute Monday to those who gave their lives in service to their country.

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks Softball team finished their run at the 4A state tournament in the first round of consolation Friday afternoon. The Mavs fell to Issaquah 1-12 in the initial bracket and 3-4 to Tahoma in consolation.
Gas prices rise in Basin and state
MOSES LAKE – Gas prices have seen one of the largest increases in Washington this year, with prices sitting at an average of $4.42, according to AAA. There was also an increase in both Grant and Adams counties from the previous week.
