EPHRATA — The Ephrata Police Department warned the public Monday regarding fake Facebook posts. EPD said to be wary of profiles with profile pictures that are unrealistic, low friend counts, exaggerated claims, poor grammar and spelling, copied-and-pasted content and the ability to comment is turned off on all posts. The department asks that people not reshare posts that look suspicious and report it to Facebook.

Ephrata School District music director performing in 2026 Pasadena Rose Parade

EPHRATA — Columbia Ridge Elementary Music Director Alicia Keegan has been selected to participate in the 2026 Pasadena Rose Parade as part of the Band Directors Marching Band. This ensemble will comprise 350 band directors from across the United States, marching along a 5.5-mile route on January 1, 2026.

Fire destroys motorhome in Soap Lake

SOAP LAKE — A fire started in Soap Lake Wednesday night involving a motor home in the 100 block of Fern Street North, according to a statement from Grant County Fire District 7. Explosions were reported at the scene, prompting a quick response from GCFD 7 at 10:35 p.m.

Ephrata’s Lopez Argueta excels in classes despite language barrier

EPHRATA – In a celebration of resilience and hard work, Ephrata High School has named Diego Lopez Argueta as one of the Students of the Month for March. His tenacity in the face of challenges, particularly his efforts in overcoming language barriers, has made a significant impact on both his teachers and peers, said his teachers.

Othello resident booked after hiding in field from ACSO

OTHELLO – Monday afternoon at around 3 p.m., the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a call saying two suspicious males were near the reporting party’s residence in the 800 block of S. Taylor Road in Othello. The deputies arrived on scene and made contact with a vehicle. While deputies were attempting contact with the two men, one of them took off running to a nearby field.

New Ephrata tower full, final testing underway

EPHRATA — The long-awaited completion of Ephrata's new water tower is in its final stages, as city officials report that the structure is expected to significantly enhance water pressure and volume throughout the community. Public Works Director Rob Harris confirmed that the new reservoir, which can hold approximately 3.8 million gallons of water, has been fully filled and final tests underway, with hopes of becoming fully operational by the end of the month.

Huskies head to Dallas for Texas Three-Step

SEATTLE - The Huskies are headed for Texas this week and their first top-25 test as 11th-ranked SMU plays host to the DoubleTree Invitational in Dallas. The Huskies take on the Mustangs this Thursday, Sept. 4, live on ACC Network at 5 p.m. Pacific time. After that, the Huskies (1-2) will stay at SMU to face Stony Brook on Friday at 2 p.m. and Northern Iowa on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Stolen forklift leads to Soap Lake power outage

SOAP LAKE — A Soap Lake man was arrested for DUI and theft of a motor vehicle after he allegedly stole a forklift from the Soap Lake School District and broke off a power pole. The man, who was not identified, also was charged with first-degree malicious mischief, according to a statement from Soap Lake Police Chief Patrick Canaday. The incident was reported at about 3:15 a.m. “The suspect drove the forklift off the school property after taking out several sections of fence from the football field. The suspect drove across Second Avenue Southwest on to Dogwood Street Southwest and struck the asphalt with (the) front forks, damaging a large portion of the asphalt,” Canaday said. “The suspect continued driving northbound on Dogwood, striking five parked vehicles on both sides (of the street). (He) drove the forklift eastbound on Main Avenue West with the telescoping fork rail extended.”

New rescue truck added to GCFD 3 fleet

QUINCY — A new rescue rig went into service at Grant County Fire District 3 July 10. Chief David Durfee said it replaces a rescue truck that was reaching the end of its service life. “It’s a rescue truck that houses all of our extrication tools for motor vehicle accidents, our specialty tech equipment, our rescue equipment. There are some added storage compartments and added lights,” he said.

Rocket test causes boom near Moses Lake, no danger reported

MOSES LAKE — An explosion north of Moses Lake Tuesday night turned out to be harmless. “At approximately 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, Stoke Space conducted a planned structural test at our Moses Lake facility as part of our Nova rocket’s qualification program,” Stoke Space Technologies Spokesman John Taylor wrote in an email to the Columbia Basin Herald. “The purpose of the test was to pressurize a propellant tank to its structural margins, eventually reaching its designed failure point – a standard engineering procedure during qualification testing.” The Moses Lake Stoke Space Technologies facility is used to test reusable second-stage rockets to deliver materials into orbit economically, according to Columbia Basin Herald archives.
