Kriete issues statement on inmate death, investigation process

EPHRATA – Grant County Sheriff Joey Kriete issued a statement Thursday regarding the passing of Richard Lambert in custody on New Year’s Eve. 

“I first want to offer my condolences to Richard Lambert’s family. Richard’s death must have come as a shock to those who knew him, and I hope that his loved ones can find peace,” Kriete said.  

Lambert was found in his bunk in the dormitory shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday when corrections deputies realized he had not shown up for breakfast. He was being held after being charged with second-degree criminal trespassing and obstructing law enforcement in connection with a Moses Lake Police Department investigation, a prior GCSO statement said.  

The staff who were on duty when Lambert was found deceased in a dormitory bunk Tuesday morning are being provided with support, he said. Additionally, the Central Basin Investigative Team, a group of law enforcement agencies made up of groups serving Central Washington, will be investigating the death to avoid any conflict of interest. Additionally, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an administrative investigation focused on reviewing Grant County Sheriff’s Office policies to ensure they are sufficient to protect inmates and deputies in the jail. BCSO’s investigation will follow CBIT’s investigation into Lambert’s death.  

“No Grant County Sheriff’s Office employees will serve as investigators for the inquiries,” Kriete said.

Kriete said the time frame for the investigations is not yet determined, but thoroughness and accuracy will take priority over speed to ensure all relevant issues are addressed.
