Moses Lake cleanup day scheduled

MOSES LAKE — The Downtown Moses Lake Association isn’t messing around — no, really. The organization has planned its annual Downtown Spring Clean-up for April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

“It used to be that we would clean the alleyways, but last year, the alleyways weren’t that terrible, and so we ended up just doing everywhere that had trash, but just in general, downtown wasn’t that dirty, so we were all done before noon,” said DMLA Executive Director Mallory Miller.  

This year, the alleys may need a bit more attention, but the idea is still to get in and clean the downtown area from the intersection of S. Alder Street and Third Avenue down to Beech Street, including the sidewalks, alleys and nooks and crannies that have rubbish accumulated in them. About 45 volunteers have signed up to get the space cleared, Miller said, so she expects that the project should go fairly quickly, especially if more people sign up.  

“That’s six to eight blocks, so it’s quite a bit of space that we’ll be covering,” Miller said.  

However, last year’s event only had about 30 volunteers and the cleanup was done around noon, she said. With more volunteers, that time may be even earlier this year, Miller said, though there has been a bit more trash downtown lately.  

DMLA will have some brooms, trash bags, gloves for children and adults and other cleaning supplies available. However, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own brooms and other supplies if they have them to help facilitate the cleanup. Ace Hardware, James Shank and Washington Federal Credit Union are sponsoring the event and will provide supplies.

Volunteers can also check out DMLA’s new office at 205 S. Division Street in Moses Lake. The new office, which Miller and the team moved into recently, gives the DMLA more visibility and a larger space for its members to utilize, she said.

    Armed with a broom, trash bags and a sense of community spirit, volunteers cleaned up the Moses Lake Downtown District last year. The annual event helps make downtown look nice and sets it up as a venue for a variety of community gatherings throughout the summer and into early fall.
