Quincy PD arrests burglary suspect

QUINCY — The Quincy Police Department, assisted by the Moses Lake Police Department and Grant County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Joshua D. Avalos, 33, of Quincy, after he was identified as a suspect in an apartment burglary. 

“At about seven o’clock this morning, we had reports of a burglary occurring in the Beverly Lane Apartments, over by the hospital area,” Quincy PD Chief Ryan Green said. “Somebody broke into one of the apartments over there and cut themselves up pretty good.”  

Green said Avalos appeared to have injuries consistent with the broken windows at the apartment complex when he was taken into custody after being near the Quincy Valley Medical Center just a couple blocks away from the location of the burglary. The apartment complex is located in the 300 block of 3rd Avenue SW. At about 2:15 p.m., officers from all three law enforcement agencies responded to a tip that Avalos was in the area and he fled on foot after seeing officers in the area.  

Officers flooded the area, according to a Quincy PD statement and searched for Avalos. While looking for him, a report came in from the Cambridge Assisted Living Center near the intersection of H Street SW and 3rd Avenue SW indicating that a male subject had entered the facility and hidden in one of the rooms. Officers got to the facility and surrounded the room, eventually making their way into the room and taking Avalos into custody, after which he was booked into the Grant County Jail.  

Green said he was grateful for the help of partnering agencies as well as the staff at Cambridge for their assistance in the situation.  

“We’re very grateful for our working relationships that we have with our partners, and then, of course, Cambridge, for notifying us right away that somebody had entered their facility,” he said.  

Green applauded Cambridge staff for not only notifying law enforcement but also for keeping their residents safe by instituting a modified shelter-in-place that removed residents from near the room Avalos had reportedly hidden in.  

While K-9 units were called for, Avalos was taken into custody before they arrived, Green said.  

Avalos was treated for minor injuries sustained while fleeing from officers prior to his booking.
