Ronald William “RW” Hilmes

| December 31, 2024 2:47 PM

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ronald (RW) William Hilmes on Dec. 17, 2024. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend, RW was born May 28, 1938, at the family home in Ransom, Kan., as the eighth of 13 children to John Henry and Dorothy Mary (Pabst) Hilmes.

RW graduated from Ransom High School and soon enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.

After his honorable discharge, he moved to Othello, Wash., where he worked for the Department of Fish and Wildlife, then farming with his brother, and later for Walker Construction.

In 1962, RW co-founded Hilmes Brothers Construction, a company specializing in concrete-lined ditches that eventually expanded into site development, including golf courses, roadways and railway projects across the Inland Northwest. As the business grew, he earned respect for his integrity, leadership and strong work ethic, and became known as an expert in his field.

RW’s love for speed and adventure shone through his passion for stock car racing. He and his brothers competed on dirt tracks across the region. He often earned trophies in his iconic car, the “Flintstone Special.”

In Othello, RW met the love of his life, Janeth Lee Jenson, and they married Jan. 30, 1965. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising five children and cultivating a strong sense of family and community.

After years of developing their property in the Yaak River Valley of Northwest Montana, RW and Janeth relocated there permanently in 1995 to live in their forever home. Their paradise, fondly known as “The Real Montana,” became a sanctuary to many. Every year they generously opened their home and property, hosting countless gatherings of family and friends.

RW lived his life with a deep-hearted love for his family. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was a steady presence, always offering wisdom and patience. He lived a life centered on family and the joy of connecting with others. He will be remembered for his kind, gentle manners and listening ear, always teaching and loving.

RW is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Janeth Hilmes, and their children: Valerie McLean (Bill), Debbie Lyle (Kevin), Bob Hilmes (Courtney), Stewart Hilmes (Abby) and Rhonda Coombes (Martin). Sisters: Mary Klitzke (Max) and Loretta Ummel. 18 grandchildren: Bryan, James, Ashley, John, Janilee, Anna, Nicole, Marissa, Rex, Sam, Riley, Luke, Alex, Danielle, Trevor, Brady, Emma and Ethan; and 18 great-grandchildren: Samantha, Jonathan, Mahtahya, Prestton, Braylee, Landon, Amalynn, Ella, Emery, Traxton, Enzlee, Molly, Brooklyn, Hunter, Clayton, Easton, Madison and Chloe. RW was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy (Dora), and his seven brothers — Chester (Chet), Francis (Bud), Harold (Herb), Marvin (M.L.), Robert (Bob), Loren (Dink) and Steven; and three sisters: Johnetta, Mildred and Dorothy.

RW’s presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 10, 2025, at St. Paul Catholic Church, located at 14181 N. Glade Road, Eltopia, WA 99330.
