MOSES LAKE — As usual the wrestling team is shut up in the humid room they call their own preparing for tonight's jamboree.

Elsie Janet (VanWinkle) Stephens, born Oct. 15, 1936, in Orondo, Wash. to Harold G. and Elsie (Vurrow) VanWinkle, passed away at her home on Soap Lake on Nov. 23, 2006. Elsie had lived her entire life in north central Washington and had managed the Ephrata Moose Lodge for over 30 years. Bowling was her favorite sport, but she had many other hobbies and interests including cooking, darts, and all kinds of arts and crafts, especially knitting and crocheting, which kept her hands busy while she enjoyed old movies. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips to the casinos. Elsie is survived by two sisters; Connie Carlson of Brentwood, Calif. and Carol Morgan of Wenatchee, two brothers; David VanWinkle of Spokane and Richard VanWinkle of Modesto, Calif., two sons; James Scott Kapalo of Lynnwood and Rober Todd Kapalo of Marysville, four daughters; Rhonda Kapalo of Spokane, Kim Pittman and Darla Jan Runnion of Soap Lake and Robin Lynn Kapalo of Ephrata, and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Elsie is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Harold (Bub) VanWinkle, and an infant son, Bradley Wayne Kapalo.

John Elmer Jones of Peoria, Ariz., formerly of Boise, Elkhorn and Moses Lake, born Dec. 7, 1917, in Kellogg, Idaho to John E. and Lydia Jones passed away on Oct. 29, 2006, at home in Peoria. John was the youngest of three children. He graduated from Kellogg High School and went to the University of Idaho, where he studied accounting and lived at Beta Theta Pi fraternity house until World War II. He served as Captain in the Army Air Corps as a financial officer in Italy. After the war, he taught accounting at the University of Idaho where he met and married Ruth Marie Curtis of Boise in 1945. They moved to Salt Lake City where John was employed by a regional CPA firm. Their first child, Tom, was born while they were in Salt Lake City. John was transferred to Boise to manage the firm's Boise office in 1950 where their second child, David was born.

A warm side to the winter season
Last Monday was the first morning I had to warm up my car before leaving my house. It may seem a hassle to most people, but I ran out to my car with gloves and scraper in hand, ready to chisel away. Each morning the weather gets colder, I know winter is on its way. Fall is great with the changing colors and all, but winter is, by far, my favorite season. Winter brings some of the best activities, like sledding, drinking hot chocolate, building fires, and holiday celebrations.

I interviewed a high school football player once who told me that toughing it out was just part of the sport. I am inclined to agree most of the time. Football is a rough sport, a sport where players are out to stick you one way or another, and it has an inherent violence that cannot be avoided.

Longtime resident Rebecca "Betty" Hochstatter passed away on Oct. 30, 2006. She was born in Radersberg Mont. and moved to Moses Lake where she met her beloved husband of 58 years, Daniel "Dan" Hochstatter. Pattsie Anne Leffler, beloved wife of Christian G. Leffler went home to her Heavenly Father at the age of 71 on Oct. 26, 2006, and was greeted there by her only son, Lance Leffler. Pat was born on July 6, 1935 to Stanley A. and Estella Lord in Richmond, Va. She attended Pottsville, Va. grammar and high schools and achieved a Bachelor of Arts in music from Penn State University. Christian and she were married on Aug. 21, 1954, and resided in Hampton, Va. before joining their son Lance and his wife Kathy, in Moses Lake in August of 1982. Pat Played the piano beautifully and taught many students throughout her adult life. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Pat will be greatly missed by many. Surviving Pat are her husband, Christian G. Leffler, her daughter-in-law, Kathy, grandchildren Amy (Blake) Ambridge, Jared (Karen) Piercy, Julie (Tim) Smith, Tiffany (Mike) Fletcher, Sara (David) McGuire, Christian C. Leffler and 12 great grandchildren. A memorial service was held today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center with Bishop Randy Gubler officiating. Arrangements are in care of Benson Family Funeral Service, Chapel, Crematory and Cemetery, Moses Lake.
