Making the world a better place
MOSES LAKE — Many of us watch the evening news and feel overwhelmed by how many people are in need and how much improvement the world could use.
People would like to help, but don't know where to begin.
The Presbyterian Women's Organization of the Congregation knows where to start and has been working for good causes for the better part of 20 years. The group held its annual holiday bazaar Saturday, giving people an opportunity to help by purchasing a variety of crafts, food, and household odds and ends.
Mary Link, president of the Presbyterian Women's Organization of the Congregation, said the proceeds from the bazaar go to missionary work. This is an international effort and in the past, this included such endeavors as aid in the local community and help for schools in Russia. Most recently, a group of 30 church members took the second trip of the year to Mississippi to help the area recover from lingering hurricane damage.
The main room at the bazaar included 12 tables with handmade crafts representing different holidays. A nook was filled with baked goods with three tables covered with cookies, brownies and other sweets.
There was also a room called "second time around," featuring used household items donated for sale at a bargain price.
The first sale of the day was a quilt made by church member Irene Warkentin, who has participated in the bazaar longer than anyone else. A Moses Lake resident since 1955, her quilts are always a highlight of the event. Her quilt was finished Thursday, two days before the bazaar with a little help piecing it together from a friend.
Warkentin, who also baked fruitcake for the event, learned quilting from her aunt and mother at age 14 and says her favorite part of the lengthy quilting process is seeing the end result.
Warkentin's work and the work of others contribute to the result of the bazaar each year, which is to provide a means for making things in the world a little bit better.
