Boys & Girls Club to offer free summer meals
MOSES LAKE — The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin will be offering breakfast and lunch for children again this summer. And this time, they’re offering it in more places. “We’re doubling our location sites,” said Cecily Hendricks, director of operations for the club. Breakfast and lunch will be served at the McGraw Clubhouse and North and Midway elementary schools, according to an announcement from the club. Lunch only will be served at Lakeview, Maple Grove and Doolittle parks. They’re free to any child 2-18 years old; there’s no need to be a Club member, the announcement said. Parents can pick up meals for their children by filling out a form. Because Moses Lake qualifies as rural, the meals don’t have to be eaten onsite.

EPHRATA – The Ephrata Facility Study Group meeting discussed several options for potential bond packages for the upcoming school year. “We really began this work about a year and a half ago when it became apparent that we were going to need to defuse some of the dollars that were associated with the 2019 bond,” Ephrata School District Superintendent Ken Murray said. “We weren't going to be able to complete all the projects that we believed we were going to be able to in that bond.”

Back on the water
Volunteer time, labor and materials crucial to bringing fountain back to Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE — Around the Columbia Basin there are certain signs that summer is coming – crews start pumping water into local pools, “roadwork ahead” signs start popping up – and the fountain in Moses Lake has been a reliable sign of summer for decades. It’s also a sign, not as much fun, that winter is coming when the fountain is pulled out of the lake.

MOSES LAKE — Just as every recipe will be at least a little different depending on the cook, said Angel Mora, Moses Lake, so too is every truck – or car or tractor or motorcycle – different depending on the owner. “You can make it, but it won’t be the same as everybody else’s,” Angel Mora said.
ACH headed to final four
COULEE CITY — The Almira/Coulee-Hartline Warriors (16-3) are back in the final four of the 1B State Tournament after defeating Wahkiakum 7-3 in the first round Saturday. According to head coach Hunter Lee, getting back to this point has been the goal all season. “We definitely expected to be here, because we were in the state championship game last year, so if we didn’t make the Final Four, I think that would not have met our expectations,” he said. ACH will play the defending state champion DeSales in the semifinals. DeSales defeated the Warriors in the 2024 state title game. The Warriors started the game against Wahkiakum with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. ACH was able to work through their batting rotation during the inning. An error gave them their first run, Carter Pitts executed a single that scored a run, and Brody Pitts singled and scored two runs. Wahkiakum responded at the top of the second with two runs of their own but would be held to no runs for the next three innings.

Huskies fall short in quarter final
OTHELLO — The Huskies soccer team (14-6-1) was defeated 3-2 in a heartbreaker against Columbia River. It was win or die trying for the Huskies, according to Head Coach Bernie Garza. “Win or die trying and leave it on the line that way. When you win the game, you say, ‘I gave it my best,’ or if you happen to lose, you’re not regretting anything. It was devastating,” he said. The Huskies were able to get on the board first in the first 10 minutes after Eric Cruz passed the ball to Asaph Alfaro, who lined up his shot and fired away. Alfaro fired a right-footed shot from the left side of the goal and threaded the needle in the upper right corner of the net.

CHEHALIS — The Othello Huskies began their push for a state championship, winning in both the opening round against R.A. Long 4-1 and in the quarterfinals against W.F. West 14-8. The Huskies entered the tournament as the number five seed. “I feel amazing, man, these guys have done a great job this year,” said Huskies head coach Sonny Garza. “Everything that I’ve kind of thrown at them, they’ve just soaked it in, and they’ve been able to go out and execute.” Othello’s first opponent in the state tournament was the number twelve seed R.A. Long. The game went scoreless in the first inning, with R.A. Long earning the first score of the game in the top of the second, which would be the team’s only score. Zayvier Olazcon singled down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 1-1. The Huskies would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Jaxon Gomez singled, Kal-El Ozuna walked and Jordan Montemayor doubled, each scoring one run for the final score of 4-1.
New WA law granting unemployment benefits to striking workers draws praise, concern
(The Center Square) – Depending on who you ask, Engrossed Senate Bill 5041 – signed into law by Gov. Bob Ferguson earlier this week – is either a much-needed social safety net for workers and their families or something that will incentivize and prolong strikes and imperil Washington state’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. ESB 5041 extends unemployment insurance benefits to striking or locked-out workers in Washington. Depending on the strike date, benefits would start 15 to 21 days after the strike begins. If the contract is resolved before that time, no benefits would be issued. Per the bill, striking workers would be able to access unemployment benefits for up to six weeks. Sen. Marcus Riccelli, D-Spokane, is the sponsor of the bill.
