Big Bend AD Griffin looks to create strong ties with community
MOSES LAKE – Creating a bond with the community is a focal point for new Big Bend Athletics Director Benjamin Griffin. Griffin takes over for former athletics director John Meeks, who was named the Director of Athletics at Vincennes University in August.
Warriors season going strong at 7-1
COULEE CITY – A blended roster of returning experience and younger talented players has helped the Almira/Coulee-Hartline boys basketball team get off to a winning start this season, as the team bears a 7-1 record through the first month of the 2024-25 season. “It’s a good mix of young and old – a good mix of experience coming in,” Head Coach Graham Grindy said. “Depth is definitely something that we are fortunate to have.”

Knights cross country ready to work
ROYAL CITY – For the Knights cross country team, it’s about more than getting to the finish line. Head Coach Ben Orth said it's about becoming your best self. “It's a competition amongst other teams, but the challenge is to be the best version of ourselves as we can be, and that's just the beauty of what cross country really is,” he said. “Every kid has to realize that challenge and be consistent, be disciplined, and put in the work and feed their bodies with good nutrition and get good sleep and all those things that help us make those incremental improvements.”
Jacks hope to build in year two of CWAC
QUINCY – After a promising first season in the Central Washington Athletic Conference, the Jacks girls soccer team is motivated. Head Coach Jesse Villalobos said he was thrilled with what his team accomplished last year. “We were pretty happy with how far we got last year. We were able to win a district game the first year in the CWAC. We’re pretty proud of that accomplishment,” he said.
Big shoes to fill in Tigers softball
EPHRATA – With the recent retirement of Ephrata softball head coach Heather Wood, the program will have to look for a new head coach for the first time since 2002. According to athletic director Bryan Johnson, the new coach will have big shoes to fill. “Heather has done a lot over the years for the softball program and just created a really positive and competitive culture, that won't be easy to replace,” Johnson said.
New principal takes charge at Warden High
WARDEN — Warden High School has welcomed its new principal, Heather Cheek, a seasoned educator with a passion for empowering students and fostering a positive school culture. Cheek, who assumed her role less than a week ago, brings a wealth of experience, having previously taught Spanish and served as an assistant principal in other districts. Cheek’s journey into education began with her desire to connect with others through language.
Eagles complete inaugural season
SOAP LAKE – The Soap Lake Eagles have concluded their first season, finishing with a winning record of 7-5-1 under head coach Tony O’Neel. This was the Eagles first year with a soccer team ever.
Grant Co. homeless plan update draft released
EPHRATA — Grant County residents are being invited to review a draft update to the county’s plan to address homeless issues. Part of the information county officials collected for the update included a survey, which Grant County Commissioner Rob Jones said highlighted one of the problems of dealing with the issues surrounding homelessness.
WA Lawmakers consider rural nursing education
OLYMPIA - Lawmakers determined to address nursing shortages across the state have proposed a new bill to establish a remote nursing education program for rural students. The bill aims to deliver education and training to registered nurses who want to learn, live, and work in their communities.
Knights 2025 soccer in review
ROYAL CITY – The 2025 chapter has closed on the Knights boy's soccer season. They ended their season with a 16-4 record and continued to maintain a winning culture. When they won their second straight district championship, head coach Jens Jensen said he expected this of his team. “We've been here before, and this group, especially, it's a lot of returners on this group from last year, and so, they understand their jobs,” he said.
