Fire near Mart Road burns about one acre

MOSES LAKE — A fire near the shore of Moses Lake Sunday afternoon only burned about an acre, but difficult terrain kept Moses Lake Fire Department crews on the scene for a while. “We’re really lucky we were able to keep it to one acre. Access to that location is really tricky,” said Heather Kok, CARES coordinator for the MLFD.

Slight decrease in WA, Grant and Adams counties fuel

MOSES LAKE – Washington, Grant and Adams counties saw a slight decrease in average fuel prices this week. However, national prices both saw a slight increase, according to AAA. “With oil prices posting a modest uptick last week, the national average price of gasoline also inched slightly higher, with just over half of U.S. states seeing increases, while nearly two dozen saw declines,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “As we approach the midpoint of the summer driving season, gasoline inventories remain just below average, while diesel inventories are considerably tighter — keeping upward pressure on diesel prices”

MOSES LAKE CITY COUNCIL Pos. 5: Joel Graves

MOSES LAKE – Joel Graves is a candidate for Position 5 on the Moses Lake City Council and has a background that encompasses both public service and private industry. Graves said he aims to address the most pressing issues facing Moses Lake, including public safety, affordable housing and economic development. “I am very hopeful about our city, and I love Moses Lake, and I think that we sell ourselves short so often as a city,” Graves said. “There's a lot of negative stigma about Moses, mostly on Facebook. We have problems, of course, but what city doesn't have issues. We have great resources here. We have plenty of land, and we have a relatively low cost of living. We have people, employers, who actually want to move here, and we should celebrate that. So, I'm very hopeful about our city, and I plan to be here like I want my great-grandkids to be here.”

Dent, Franz say bipartisan support led to progress in WA wildfire response

MOSES LAKE – Getting anything done in politics takes solid relationships and the ability to reach across political divides, regardless of how partisan the overall conversation is. Former Washington Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz, a Democrat, and local State Representative Tom Dent, a Republican, and their successes in advancing wildfire management are a prime example of that, they say. “Everything, from what I learned and how quickly we were able to make the changes and get results, is based on relationships,” Franz said in a late June interview. “It’s based on valuing other people’s opinions and their experience and their expertise.”

Psalms 23 offers coffee with a dash of hope and a pinch encouragement

MOSES LAKE — The 23rd Psalm is one of the best-known passages in the Bible, filled with assurances of God’s protection and favor. That’s what Larisa Vorobey had in mind when she opened her new business. “I lost my mom, and then my baby, and then I found myself navigating life as a single mom, (all) within six months,” said Vorobey, owner of Psalms 23, a new coffee shop in Moses Lake. “There were moments I didn’t think I would make it through, but even in the darkest times, God was with me. So, Psalms 23 became a promise I held on to.”
