COLUMBIA BASIN — With the weather we’ve seen in the Basin lately, it’s hard to know if it’s time to wear shorts or raincoats. Either way, there are a host of things to get out and do this week. Here are a few:

Challenges of homelessness prompting debate in Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE — The challenges around homelessness in Grant County and the Open Doors Sleep Center in Moses Lake, and how to address them, prompted the same reaction from Moses Lake Mayor Dustin Swartz and Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce Director Debbie Doran-Martinez. “It’s frustrating,” Doran-Martinez said.
State treasurer visits Ephrata, discusses WA financial health
EPHRATA – Washington State Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti visited the Ephrata Rotary Club Tuesday to discuss his role and the financial health of the state. He said he is trying to visit all of the local Rotary Clubs around the state to educate communities on state finance and answer questions from constituents.
Othello secures 6-0 victory against Quincy
Huskies sit at 8-1 in the number three spot in the CWAC following win
OTHELLO – The Othello Huskies earned a 6-0 victory in Tuesday afternoon’s game against the Jacks. “We had a pretty good game there,” said Huskies head coach Sonny Garza. “We had a good approach at the plate, strung a few hits together in the middle innings and were able to get some runs.”
Traveling to Spokane — mind your speed on I-90
SPOKANE — Drivers who are speeding on Interstate 90 between the Liberty Lake and State Line interchanges between now and the end of June may receive a notice from the Washington Department of Transportation. WSDOT will be installing “speed cameras” to identify cars traveling in excess of the speed limit.
Soap Lake City Council still seeking to fill two seats
SOAP LAKE – The Soap Lake City Council is actively seeking candidates to fill two open council positions. "Participating in city council is not just about being in the government; it's about community representation," Council Member Judith Gorman said, noting that she spoke on her own behalf and not the entire council. "The city council plays a crucial role in shaping policies that affect every resident in Soap Lake.”
Warden council undecided on port road project
WARDEN – Warden City Council met for a regular meeting Tuesday to continue the discussion on the Port of Warden Industrial Road Project and pass several other resolutions including signing the Grant County Economic Development agreement, accepting a parade for graduating students and allowing for bids to take place on two other projects.

Surfin' into dental health
MOSES LAKE – Smile Surfers Kids Dentistry held a ribbon cutting for the new dental practice at 1429 S. Pioneer Way, Suite 2 in Moses Lake last week. The office is designed to be fun for children with an atmosphere that puts them at ease during visits that may seem scary. The Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce said in a statement that they’re excited to welcome the practice to the community. Rick E. Mitchell
July 18, 1949 — April 7, 2025
Rick E. Mitchell, 75, passed away early in the morning on April 7th with his wife, Marlene and daughter, Tami by his side. Rick was born in Ritzville, Washington in 1949 to W.E. (Mitch) and Lilias Mitchell. Rick then grew up with his younger sister and brother, Candise and Terry in Moses Lake, Washington. Rick enjoyed little league baseball, fishing and spending time traveling to Arkansas and California with his family.
New Moses Lake shop offers electronics and service
MOSES LAKE — For almost a century, Radio Shack was the electronics geek’s mecca, with parts and components for any project as well as cutting-edge toys and kits. Then the company ran into financial trouble in the 2010s and closed more than 8,000 franchise stores, including the one in Moses Lake. Now its products are making a little bit of a comeback.
Ferguson signed 23 bills into law this week
OLYMPIA – Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed 24 bills into law in the past week. The bills change laws covering issues from suicide prevention to education funding to vehicle inspections.
Othello boys find success against Toppenish
Rainy weather makes for interesting matches between Othello and Toppenish
OTHELLO – The Othello Huskies tennis team faced off against Toppenish Monday afternoon with the boys winning 3-2. The Othello girls went 2-3 giving the girls their first loss of the season.

Hundreds honored on Vikings President’s and VP’s lists
MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College announced Monday that 303 Basin students have been named to the President’s List for winter quarter 2025. Hundreds more made the Vice President’s List. The Columbia Basin Herald team congratulates our local scholars on the recognition earned for their hard work and dedication to learning.
