VIRUS DIARY: A cancer survivor takes comfort in her piano

NEW YORK (AP) — Since mid-March, when my NYC friends and I began sheltering at home, my piano has been a big source of comfort. I pound out the keys to Broadway tunes ("On My Own" from “Les Miserables”) and classical music (Rachmaninoff and Haydn). I even break into song, mostly off-key, perhaps annoying my neighbors in my Manhattan apartment building.

I support Tom Dent

I have spent the majority of this last spring and summer traveling and campaigning for Tom Dent to become the next 13th District state representative. We have traveled to every city and town in the 13th District area for every festival, county fair, parade and appreciation day. As we have traveled I noticed that there is a central gathering place for the residents of the areas, where there is always really good food to be enjoyed. As we have enjoyed these functions Tom always seeks out groups of people, tells them who he is and why he is there and then does something very very important, he listens to them intently. This is the kind of candidate that Tom is and this is the kind of representative that he will be in Olympia. He will listen to the people who elect him so that he can represent them in the best and most efficient way that he can.

VIRUS DIARY: Keeping New York alive, one song at a time

NEW YORK (AP) — Outside, the soundtrack of sirens wailed, each another death blow to the city that had nurtured my development as a musician for so long. But from inside my life on lockdown, an unexpected reconnection to my catalog of sounds was handing me hope for New York's future.

'Dreary summer' expected in California as virus dims plans

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In these dark times, clouded by fears of an enemy we can’t see and sheltered in homes we're itching to leave, it's reassuring to know that California's sunsets over the Pacific are just as vivid. You just can't enjoy them with sand between your toes.
