OTHELLO — The Old Hotel Art Gallery will celebrate its 50th anniversary at its benefit auction Saturday.

Cold Diggers opens stand in Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE — The name of the new ice cream and waffle stand at Nelson Road and Pioneer Way came out of the blue. “We already had a different name picked out,” said Laura Farias, who owns the new business with her husband Martin Farias. “But ‘Cold Diggers’ came to me randomly, and it was super catchy. I bounced the idea off my 9-year-old son and he loved it, so we went with it.” The Fariases have been offering homemade ice cream at the Moses Lake Farmers Market since the market opened for the year in May, she said. In July they added waffles to their menu, and now they’ll continue to offer both from a trailer next to FAA Coffee House.

Warden raises levy collection by 1%

WARDEN — The Warden City Council unanimously approved an increase in the City of Warden’s levy at the Oct. 14 regular council meeting. This will bring around $6,860 to the city.

Annexation request denied by Othello council

OTHELLO — Othello City Council members voted 6-0 to decline a request to annex property south of State Route 26 along West Bench Road. The decision followed a third public comment session, some of it impassioned, on the proposal. Council member Angel Garza said he thought accepting the annexation proposal would move growth in the wrong direction.

Huskies earn homecoming victory over Tigers

OTHELLO – The Huskies (5-1) earned a 33-21victory over the Ephrata Tigers (3-3) Friday during the Othello High homecoming game. It was a close game between the two conference rivals from start to finish. “It was very exciting,” said Huskies quarterback Quade Gonzalez. “I like games like that, where you’re fighting the whole time, but there’s lot of stuff we can clean up.”

Miller pitched six sharp innings, Jorge Polanco hit a go-ahead single in the sixth and the Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 Sunday night as they returned to the ALCS for the first time in 24 years.

2 graduate from Community Court with hopes for bright futures

MOSES LAKE – Two participants in Grant County’s Community Court Program graduated Wednesday afternoon after completing addiction treatment and other steps to walk away from drugs and the poor decisions they can lead to. In the case of Sherm Rowland, the graduation is a walk away from a trying past and a celebration of just more than 18 months of being off drugs.

MOSES LAKE — With the weather getting colder, some creepy crawly critters are likely to decide that your home should also be their home. A new business in town aims to help evict them. “Spiders, ants, just generally insects,” said Josh Gilliam, owner of Bug Out Pest and Spray. “We’re a very hot and arid environment, but we also have access to a lot of water, so that brings out the bugs.” Bug Out opened for business Aug. 1 and held its official ribbon-cutting Tuesday in Moses Lake. Gilliam has been in the extermination business for about 25 years, he said, first in Spokane and then in Moses Lake. He decided to go out on his own after meeting with his partner Kip Burns, who also owns Blinds for Any Budget and B and B Doors.

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers (1-8) defeated the Quincy Jacks (0-9) 3-0 on Tuesday. The Tigers were hitting all cylinders, holding the Jacks to 11 points in all three sets. Head Coach Britney MacLeod said it was good to see her team get a league win Tuesday night.

Mavs find success at Yakima meet

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks swim team traveled to Lions Pool in Yakima last Thursday to compete against Sunnyside and West Valley. At the meet the team found success in the pool and built themselves up for the second half of the season.
