Bears made presence felt in the ag markets Thursday afternoon

Corn futures dipped on China talk Thursday. Corn futures followed soybeans higher Wednesday night and seemed likely to keep rising after the weekly Export Sales report stated the new-crop result far above expectations. However, rumors that China will insist that U.S. DDGs shipped to that country be certified free of an unapproved GMO trait apparently undercut the market. September corn settled 1.0 cent lower at $3.615/bushel late Thursday, while December sagged 1.25 cents to $3.695.

Corn futures end Wednesday lower

Corn futures ended the day with lower quotes. That marked the seventh consecutive session of weakness. The corn prices fell to the lowest since August 2010 on a continuous chart. The market was depressed by the ideal crop weather conditions as the crop moves into pollination. However, talk of sizeable export sales to unknown destinations and Japan limited the sustained losses. Traders are anticipating USDA to raise the yield to an average of 166.8 from USDA’s estimate at 165.3 in June. September corn dropped 7.00 cents to $3.9125/bushel, while December dove 6.25 cents to $3.98.

Ag markets began Wednesday's trading in mixed fashion

Favorable conditions continued depressing corn futures Tuesday night. Although China announced overnight that it will increase its domestic grain storage capacity by 50 million tonnes, that apparently did little to support corn futures. Prospects for a bumper autumn harvest reportedly dragged yellow grain prices lower once again. July slid 2.5 cents to $4.405/bushel early Wednesday morning, while December declined 2.75 to $4.38.

Ag markets diverged Wednesday morning

Big ethanol production may be boosting corn futures. Corn futures bounced from fresh five-month lows yesterday and remained strong overnight. Bulls were probably pleased as well by the weekly EIA report stating last week’s ethanol production at a record high (due to rising gasoline prices). July corn gained 4.0 cents to $4.4275/bushel by late Wednesday morning, while December added 1.75 cents to $4.4125.

Crop futures began the week rather poorly, but livestock markets looking up

DDG news sent corn futures lower Monday. Current weather forecasts continue pointing to ideal U.S. conditions, which weighed upon corn futures today. However, Sunday night news that China has stopped issuing import permits for U.S. distillers grains (ddg) apparently exaggerated the losses. July corn dove 8.0 cents to $4.51/bushel at their Monday close, while December lost 7.75 cents to $4.50.

Ag markets diverged again Thursday

Weather news continued weighing on corn futures Thursday. The weekly USDA Export Sales report seemed supportive of CBOT corn prices, but the market suffered moderate across-the-board losses today. Ultimately, improved Midwest weather and prospects for a huge fall crop are depressing prices. July corn slumped 7.25 cents to $4.49/bushel at its Thursday settlement, while December slid 6.25 cents to $4.4725.

Ag markets took some rather divergent paths Wednesday

Favorable crop prospects seemed to renew pressure on CBOT corn Wednesday. Talk that recent corn and wheat losses will reinvigorate demand boosted those markets Tuesday night, but yellow grain increases prices couldn’t be sustained. Traders apparently resumed their recent sales in response to the favorable moisture situation across the Corn Belt. July corn slipped 2.0 cents to $4.5625/bushel in late Wednesday trading, while December slid 0.75 cent to $4.535.

Ag markets ended Monday on a decidedly mixed note

Corn futures seemed to post a technical bounce Monday. The ag markets started this week rather poorly as forecasts for favorable spring weather continued weighing on prices. The weekly Export Inspections report didn’t seem very supportive, but nearby corn futures bounced from early lows. Beans led the rebound, but it apparently had a technical component as well. July corn settled 0.25 cent lower at $4.655/bushel Monday, while December bounced 1.0 cent to $4.585.

Ag markets were decidedly mixed again Thursday morning

Weather forecasts are again weighing on corn prices. Although corn futures followed the bean market higher yesterday, bulls couldn’t sustain the upward momentum despite signs of potential technical support. Ultimately, favorable spring weather is pointing to a good fall harvest, which in turn is weighing on prices. July corn slumped 4.5 cents to $4.68/bushel late Thursday morning, and December lost 4.0 cents to $4.655.
