‘Cardiac Cougs’ hold off tough Broncos team

WARDEN – On Friday, the Warden Cougars (5-1) held off a late comeback attempt by the Lind-Ritzville Broncos (2-4) with a late touchdown to secure a 12-7 win. Cougars quarterback Kam Jensen was happy for his team after the win. “It feels great. It's a great team win; the defense really pulled it in for us. They played great all game, and I just love my boys,” Jensen said.

MOSES LAKE – The two largest fires in the state, the Lower Sugarloaf Fire and the Labor Mountain Fire both had growth in acreage and containment this week. The Lower Sugarloaf fire grew nearly 2,000 acres from Tuesday bringing the blaze up to about 43,000 acres. However, containment also went up from 55% Tuesday to 77% as of Thursday. The Labor Mountain Fire grew nearly 1,000 acres from Tuesday. Containment saw improvement though going from 7% containment Tuesday to 15% containment Thursday.

CHENEY – On Saturday, the Eastern Washington Eagles defeated the Portland State Vikings 35-27 to bring home the Dam Cup and cap off a successful homecoming game. After a couple years without it, Head Coach Aaron Best said it’s good to have it back in their hands. “It's been out of our hands for over 1,000 days, and now it's back in Cheney and after a hard fought back and forth affair late in that game, and just proud of our players and our coaches for finding a way,” Best said.

Fire season coming to an end

MOSES LAKE — The fire season is starting to come to an end in Washington, according to Department of Natural Resources Communications Manager Ryan Rodruck. “We’re certainly winding down the season,” Rodruck said. “I would say that for western Washington, we have seen that season-ending precipitation at this point. I would not expect any large, costly fires to materialize in western Washington at this point.” However, eastern and central Washington are still waiting for season-ending precipitation, which will likely not happen this week, Rodruck said.

Despite the loss, Huskies head coach Aurelio Guevara said he was proud of the way his players fought to the end on the pitch. “I think my girls played well,” Guevara said. “For any team to go down 2-0, it's easy to hang their heads, but these girls came right back a minute after and scored. These girls battled. I think they played really well.”

MOSES LAKE — The Cape at Interlake had its grand opening Tuesday, with a ribbon-cutting and an open house for the community. “This property is primarily targeted for farm workers, folks who are in the agriculture industry, but we also have additional set-asides for people who are disabled or families with children,” said Taylor Hunt, development manager for Vaughn Bay Construction, which built the Cape at Interlake.

MOSES LAKE – The Annual UMANI festival was held on Saturday this year on Third Avenue hosted by Columbia Basin Allied Arts, the Moses Lake Public Library and EDUBS. “It went really well,” said Colombia Basin Allied Arts Executive Director Shawn Cardwell. “We’re grateful to the city for hosting us so generously and I think every performance was fantastic, all the food was delicious, all the resources were engaging, and the lowriders were gorgeous.”
