Virus Outbreak, ADVISORY
While deaths are mounting rapidly in the U.S., the nation’s second surge in coronavirus cases appears to be leveling off, though experts say that the good news is driven by changes in a few large states and that cases are rising in many states. Indeed, few scientists are celebrating. Some are skeptical that improvements in states like Florida and Texas will endure. They are watching worrisome upticks across much of the country.

Virus Outbreak, ADVISORY
Just days after New York leaders ordered people to stay home, authorities are mobilizing to head off a potential public health disaster in the big city. New York has emerged as the nation's coronavirus hot spot. A makeshift morgue has been et up outside Bellevue Hospital, and the city's police have been told to patrol nearly empty streets to enforce social distancing. Public health officials are hunting down beds and medical equipment and putting out a call for more doctors and nurses for fear the number of sick will explode in a matter of weeks, overwhelming hospitals the way the virus did in Italy and Spain.
Virus Outbreak, ADVISORY
With coronavirus deaths climbing rapidly in New York, the governor announced Friday he will use his authority to take ventilators and protective gear from private hospitals and companies that aren’t using them. The decision comes as the coronavirus outbreak has snapped the United States’ record-breaking hiring streak of nearly 10 years. And medical workers in the U.S. and Europe are watching supplies of medicine, protective equipment and breathing machines dwindle by the hour.
