Basin events for Jan. 3-10, 2025
COLUMBIA BASIN — It’s a new year and things are beginning to get back to normal after the holiday season. Here are a few of the things going on in the Basin this week:

Othello tennis bests Quincy
Huskies girls remain undefeated on the season
OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies tennis squad was able to win overall against the Quincy Jacks Saturday morning with the girls going 3-2 and the boys 4-1. “My girls right now, they’re all really strong so they all play well,” said Huskies girls’ coach Priscilla Tovar. “Tennis is such a head game, so (they’re) keeping a positive attitude and just going out there and finishing.”
MLSD levy decision tomorrow
MOSES LAKE – Voters must cast their votes by 8 p.m. Tuesday evening in the Moses Lake School District’s educational programs and operations levy. Initial results will be available that night, though a final count will take a bit due to Washington’s mail-in voting system. The levy proposal is for four years.
Basin wrestlers bound for state after districts
MOSES LAKE – District tournaments were held across the state on Friday and Saturday, where boys and girls wrestlers punched their tickets into next week’s Mat Classic in Tacoma.
Knights bring in nearly 30 wrestlers for upcoming season
ROYAL CITY – Looking to build off of last year’s third-place finish at the Girls 1B/2B/1A/2A Mat Classic, the Royal Knights enter this season with a bigger roster of 28 wrestlers, growing from last year’s team of 16 athletes.

ROYAL CITY – The Knights were crowned league champions for the 10th-straight season with Thursday night’s 49-7 win over Connell, gaining nearly 400 yards of offense in the win. Thursday night was the seventh time the Knights have held an opponent to seven or fewer points this season...
Red zone struggles cost Mavs in 35-8 loss to Eastmont
EAST WENATCHEE – Moses Lake was able to move the ball up and down the field on Friday night against Eastmont but went one-for-four in the red zone, resulting in a 35-8 loss to the Wildcats, the Maverick’s first loss of the season. “Just didn’t finish drives,” Moses Lake coach Brett Jay said. “We got to down to the two once, got down to the six-inch line once and we didn’t punch it in. We got exposed a little bit.” ...
New Tiger boys tennis coach focused on skill building, agility, competitive play
EPHRATA – Courtney Burck has stepped into the role of the new varsity boys tennis coach at Ephrata High School with excitement and has an appreciation for the help she’s gotten as she takes on the new role going into the 2024 spring tennis season.
Huskies bring plenty of returning players into 2023
OTHELLO – Coming off of a 15-8 season in 2023 where 13 of the team’s 18 rostered players were underclassmen, the Othello baseball team is looking to build off of success from a year ago.

Eagles finish top ten in Big Sky Championship
LITCHFIELD PARK, AZ – Eastern Washington’s womens golf finished ninth in the Big Sky Championships on Wednesday, shooting 911 overall, according to a statement by Eastern Washington University Athletics. "This week's finish was not the outcome we were hoping for after a strong finish last week," head coach Brenda Howe explained. "Day one had some good scores from our one, two and three seeded players, with the four and five struggling. Day two and three, the four and five seeded players [Brooke Mahler and Spencer Cerenzia] stepped up and did their job playing in those positions. Unfortunately, we struggled in the one-through-three spots the last two days."
Mavs coach excited for new wrestling season
MOSES LAKE – After a year of improvement, the Moses Lake High School wrestling squad is ready to hit the mats once again. Head Coach Jose Tanguma said he gets excited when a new season arrives. “We have a good group of kids, a very strong freshman class that came up through our wrestling club, and in these kids, you can see they're very mature for being freshmen, and they're setting high goals for themselves," Tanguma said.
Eagle women's golf wins academic awards
CHENEY – Eastern Washington Eagles women’s golf team has been collecting academic hardware as of late, according to statements by EWU athletics and the Big Sky Conference. This week, the Eagles were named academic champions in women’s golf for the 2024-25 season and the Big Sky’s team of the month.

BASIN WRESTLING REPORT: Royal takes second at home tourney
ROYAL CITY -- Eight local boys wrestling teams took the mat at Saturday’s Royal Christmas Tournament, with the Royal Knights having the highest finish of the Basin squads (second place, 169 points).
Lions’ Ferguson hits 1K points in win over Entiat
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School Lions basketball team earned a statement 75-29 win in their season opener against Entiat. During this victory, Lions senior Johnny Ferguson hit a personal milestone of 1,000 career points. “I didn’t even know that I was going to hit 1,000,” said Johnny. “I was pretty shocked and it was a surreal moment.” The Lions started the game off with a strong offensive front while also preventing their opponent from scoring for the majority of the first quarter, gaining an early 25-7 lead. This continued into the second quarter as the speed and physicality of the Lions’ game plan kept Entiat down to extend the lead to 49-13 by the end of the half.
