Miguel Andujar hits 2 HRs to help Athletics beat Mariners 5-4
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Miguel Andujar hit two home runs, Jeffrey Springs pitched six solid innings and the Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Wednesday night. Brent Rooker and Darell Hernaiz also homered for the A's, who have won six of their last seven games.
Ending summer school with a splash
WARDEN — The Warden School District celebrated the conclusion of its summer school program with an exciting Field Day, an event designed to showcase the social and emotional growth of students while offering a vibrant finale to six weeks of enriching activities. “Field Day is kind of a big finale to our six-week program,” said Warden Summer School Supervisor Lisa Lucas. “The kids participate in different sports and games, practicing their social emotional skills and just bonding with one another.” This year’s summer school program hosted approximately 200 students, with a total enrollment of around 270 when including the high schoolers. The program catered to a diverse age range, welcoming students from kindergarten through 11th grade, and provided a unique learning environment over the course of 18 days.

EPHRATA — Grant County Sheriff Joey Kriete has been elected vice president of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. “I am honored to represent the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs in this new capacity as Vice President,” Kriete said. “I look forward to working alongside my peers across the state to support law enforcement excellence and strengthen public safety in all our communities.”
Moses Lake athletes attend gridiron camp
MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Youth Football Camp hosted by the Mavericks football team concluded yesterday. The camp was held July 28, 29 and 30 and was open to youth from kindergarten to eighth grade. “I just love the environment, these little kids are out here having fun,” said Carson Huberdeau, who is a senior on the Mavs football team this year. “This is fun for us, coaching, it’s awesome.”
ACH Legion 18U finishes season with loss in state tournament
COULEE CITY – The Almira/Coulee-Hartline Legion 18u (16-13) baseball team concluded the summer season in the state tournament at Shade Park’s Ron Brooks Field. The team entered as the fifth seed in the tournament and took two losses over the weekend.

We are sad to announce the passing of Mark Randall Call on July 20, 2025. He was our brother, uncle and dear friend. Mark was born on February 23, 1950, in Pasco, Washington to Mark and Lucille Call. In 1952, the family moved to Quincy, Washington, where Mark lived most of his life.
Crime declining, drugs climbing locally, statewide
OLYMPIA — In the 2024 Crime in Washington report published by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, released Monday, a noticeable decline in crime rates across various categories was reported. Various police chiefs and Grant County Sheriff Joey Kriete said trends found within the report were mostly reflected locally.
Moses Lake athletes hit national track competition
MOSES LAKE – Last week, three athletes from Moses Lake Athletics Club competed in the USA Track and Field Nationals event. Brody Baker, Jaedynn Dietmeyer and Liam O’Shea traveled to Savannah, Georgia from July 21 to July 27. Looking back, Dietmeyer called it a great experience.
Sanchez ready for her new home
ROYAL CITY — A recent graduate from the Knights softball program is ready for the next step in her athletic journey. Madison Sanchez is making the move from Walla Walla to Whitworth this fall. “I wasn't sure if I wanted to play on and I wasn't sure if I wanted to just go to school, but I took a tour of the college with some of the players, and I got a really good insight into the team that they have ... it was awesome to watch how they all worked together and just how they all communicated like they were one big family,” Sanchez said.
Masquers to audition for ‘Little Shop of Horrors’
SOAP LAKE — Auditions for the Masquers Theater production of “Little Shop of Horrors” will take place Aug. 16-17, according to an announcement from the theater troupe. All roles are for adults and are available, according to the announcement. Auditioners will be asked to sing a verse or chorus from the play, preferably one specific to the character for which they’re auditioning, and do a cold read of lines from the script. Auditions will be recorded for the final selection process. An audition form is available at the Masquers website and should be submitted along with a headshot. Resumes are optional.
WSDOT adjusts ramp closures near Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE — The Washington State Department of Transportation issued updated schedules Tuesday for the paving work being done on Interstate 90 near Moses Lake. The closures will begin with the eastbound onramp closure at Exit 174 scheduled for July 30 and 31 from 7 a.m.-noon and the eastbound offramp closure is now scheduled for July 31 from 7 a.m.-noon, according to the WSDOT announcement.

OTHELLO — Oscar Munoz returned to his hometown to start his law enforcement career. Munoz was sworn in as the newest Othello Police Department officer Monday.

David Westphalen, 64, of Moses Lake, Wash., passed away peacefully at Confluence Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash., on July 24, 2025, after a long battle with heart problems.

Vic Gilliland, long-time professor of the biological sciences and known as Big Bend marathon runner and national cyclist, passed away June 28, 2025, after battling a long-term illness with courage, integrity, and perseverance. He was 90.
Castillo allows 1 run in 7 innings, Naylor hits 1st HR for Mariners in 3-1 win over Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Luis Castillo allowed a run in seven innings, Josh Naylor hit his first home run for the Mariners and Seattle beat the Athletics 3-1 on Monday night. Castillo (8-6) gave up five hits and had four strikeouts. Andrés Muñoz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 24th save. Naylor, Cal Raleigh and Ben Williamson had two hits apiece.
Moses Lake Alumni Association awards 12 scholarships
MOSES LAKE — Celebrating 19 years of service, the Moses Lake Alumni Association met on May 3 at the Columbia Basin Technical Skills Center in Moses Lake to award scholarships for 12 college-bound students. Since its launch in 2007, the MLAA has awarded 252 scholarships worth $277,000, funded by members’ dues and donations.

ELLENSBURG — The Central Washington Sixers 14U baseball team (24-14-2) concluded their season in the Bullpen Series: Season Finale tournament Sunday. According to head coach Ray Lopez, his players left it all on the field.
Paving project to close I-90 ramps near Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE — The project involving repaving a section of Interstate 90 near Moses Lake will require temporary closures of the off and on ramps from Exit 174 to Exit 179 to allow Washington State Department of Transportation contractors to work on the lanes leading up to the ramps. “They are part of what’s necessary to get the paving project that’s going on in that region completed,” said Sebastian Moraga from the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Communications department.

Max W. Sparr, 91, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on July 16, 2025. Max was born in August 1933 to Arvid and Elizabeth Sparr on their farm near Red Oak, Iowa. He was the youngest child and his name was chosen by his sisters Evelyn, Dorothy and his brother Marion.
