Virus Outbreak, Advisory

Spain called off the Running of the Bulls in July, the U.S. scrapped the national spelling bee in June and Germany even canceled Oktoberfest, making it clear that the gathering drive to return to normal in Europe and the U.S. could be a two-steps-forward, one-step-back process in the effort to stave off coronavirus. Meanwhile, U.N. leaders called for efforts to ensure that all people have access to testing, medical supplies, drugs and future vaccines, especially in developing countries where virus cases were beginning to crest. African officials have been outspoken about the need for medical supplies across the 54-nation continent.

Virus Outbreak, ADVISORY

The steep rise in coronavirus deaths appears to be leveling off in New York, echoing a trend underway in Italy and Spain, while the crisis is going in in the opposite direction in Britain, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved to intensive care after his condition deteriorated. Johnson’s office says the 55-year-old prime minister is conscious and does not need to be put on a ventilator for now. He is the world’s first known head of government to fall ill with the virus.

How a chance reunion led to Nipsey Hussle’s death

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ermias Asghedom and Eric Holder both grew up in the same Los Angeles neighborhood, were both part of the gang known as the Rollin' 60s, and were both aspiring rappers. Asghedom, who went by the name Nipsey Hussle, would go on to become a hip-hop star, neighborhood legend and local hero. Holder's music never caught on. He went by the name Fly Mac, but everyone in his neighborhood knew him by his nickname, a profane moniker for excrement. On March 31, 2019, after Hussle calmly told Holder he was gaining a reputation as a “snitch,” the 29-year-old Holder shot and killed the 33-year-old Hussle, according to police, prosecutors and witnesses. Holder has pleaded not guilty.

Virus Outbreak, ADVISORY

A staggering 16.8 million Americans have lost their jobs in just three weeks in a measure of how fast the coronavirus has brought world economies to their knees. Meanwhile, religious leaders around the globe are urging people to celebrate Good Friday and Easter from the safety of their homes. Politicians and public health officials warn that the hard-won gains against the scourge must not be jeopardized by relaxing social distancing over the holiday weekend. In Europe, authorities set up roadblocks.
