MLPD arrests one after firearm shown at coffee stand
MOSES LAKE – A 34-year-old Moses Lake man was arrested Monday afternoon after displaying a handgun in the drive-through of an espresso stand, according to Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

One injured in Desert Aire shooting
DESERT AIRE — One man sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting at the Shell gas station at 5 Desert Aire Drive SW in Desert Aire Saturday around 5:30 p.m. The case is still under investigation.
Looking for his home Turf
OTHELLO – Turf, a spunky little fella with a lot of cute and a lot of love to give, is currently staying at Adams County Pet Rescue. Moses Lake man dies in collision near Soap Lake
SOAP LAKE — A Moses Lake man was killed Saturday morning in a collision just outside Soap Lake, according to a statement from the Washington State Patrol. The man was identified as Ricardo Alcantar Mesina, 39, according to the statement.

SOAP LAKE – Tied at 59 with just over three minutes to go, the Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School Lions forced key defensive stops and connected on clutch baskets to leave Soap Lake with a 64-62 win Tuesday night.
EWU earns win in rivalry game against WSU
PULLMAN – The Eastern Washington Eagles Women’s basketball team (6-4) earned a significant win against the Washington State Cougars 71-69. This game marked the Eagles’ first win over the Cougars since March 18, 2015 when the teams faced off in the first round of the Women’s NIT tournament. “Washington State is a really good team. They’re very well coached and they’re prepared,” said Eagles Head Coach Joddie Gleason. “They run their offense really well and are hard to guard. Coming in here to get the win is huge for us. It shows that we’re read to get these road wins in the Big Sky.”
Mavs suffer first loss in overtime
MOSES LAKE – On Tuesday, the Moses Lake Mavericks (4-1) lost a heartbreaker to the Wenatchee Panthers in a 7-6 shootout. The Mavs came out strong but struggled to put Wenatchee away. Head Coach Alysha Overland said they beat themselves.
Huskies roll ahead of Ellensburg to start season
OTHELLO – The Othello Huskies made a strong start to their season after earning a 49-0 win on the road over Ellensburg Saturday evening. “We’re senior-dominated, we have guys with a lot of experience,” said Huskies defensive coach Kevin Hale. “We have all-state quality guys at certain positions, so we expected to do well, and we did on both sides of the ball.”
Community comes together for Daniel Alcala’s family following shooting
EPHRATA — In the wake of a shooting incident in Ephrata July 20, the local community is rallying around the family of Daniel Alcala, who was fatally shot during an altercation at a gas pumps. Alcala, 30, was a husband and father to three children. According to the Grant County Coroner Investigator Maxwell Yoder, his death resulted from multiple gunshot wounds. The death has officially been ruled a homicide, according to a statement from the City of Ephrata.
Wildcats selected to finish second in preseason poll
ELLENSBURG – On Thursday, the Central Washington Wildcats were selected to finish second in the Lone Star Conference, according to a statement by CWU athletics. The 2025 preseason poll also indicated the Wildcats received four first-place votes. “It's an honor that the schools in the LSC think that highly of us,” CWU Head Football Coach Chris Fisk said.
Ephrata HS Honor Society hosting Oscars for character awards
EPHRATA — The Ephrata High School Honor Society will host its fourth annual Oscar Night today. The event starts at 7 p.m. in the Ephrata High School commons. “It was four years ago; our honor society president came up with the idea for it,” EHS National Honor Society advisor Sheila Massey said. “They were looking for a way to do a little bit more with something that tied in with the pillars of Honor Society, which are scholarship, leadership, service and character. They were hoping to kind of get away from only the focus on scholarship and grades, and so the president at that time kind of brainstormed some ideas and came up with the idea of Oscar night to celebrate character awards.”

MOSES LAKE — Whether or not benefits through the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program will be available to Washington residents after Nov. 1 is still to be determined and is dependent on events in Washington DC. Those events are still unfolding, said Matt Reed, communications director for Fourth District Congressman Dan Newhouse.
