MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake School Board unanimously approved a balanced budget for the 2025–26 school year during its regular meeting Thursday evening. The $144.6 million budget matches projected revenues with expenditures.

Wenatchee Valley College honors 35 Basin students
WENATCHEE — Wenatchee Valley College has released its Dean’s List and President’s List for spring quarter 2025. To qualify for the President’s List, a student must maintain a grade point average of 4.0 while taking at least 12 college-level credits. A student who maintains a GPA of 3.5 or higher while taking 12 or more credits qualifies for the Dean’s List

Wahluke schools budget for declining enrollment
MATTAWA — The general fund for the Mattawa School District will be about $51.5 million for the 2025-26 school year. That’s slightly higher than the 2024-25 budget, but district superintendent Andy Harlow said the district is seeing a trend of declining enrollment. He cited the incoming kindergarten class as an example. “I would say the last two years have been about 180 (students). Now we’re looking at bringing in 134-136,” he said.

Cougars baseball announces 2025 signing class
PULLMAN – According to a statement by Washington State athletic communications, the Cougars baseball program has finalized its 2025 incoming class, Head Coach Nathan Choate announced Monday. “We are excited to welcome this new signing class to our program,” Choate said. “We feel we addressed several needs highlighted by pitching depth. We are looking forward to getting back to work.”
Othello youth soccer looking for volunteer coaches
OTHELLO – On Monday, the City of Othello announced it needs more volunteer coaches for Othello MLS GO, a local youth soccer group. According to Parks and Recreation Coordinator Valerie Hernandez, this is not an unusual need to have. Prior coaching experience is not required, she said.

MOSES LAKE – The Open Doors Sleep Center in Moses Lake has been closed for about seven weeks and Jeff Sursely, police captain with the Moses Lake Police Department, said Moses Lake PD has not seen any increase in calls for disturbances or property crimes. “It’s pretty stable, that’s how I’d describe it,” said Sursely.

Court cases moving forward in March 21 drive-by fatality shooting
EPHRATA – Two men, Mattew Valdez, 18, and Jose Beltran Rodriguez, 20, both of Moses Lake, were arrested in late April in association with a drive-by shooting in Moses Lake that led to one death and several injuries. Their legal process is moving forward and both have court dates set for September and October.

CHENEY — One hundred seven students from Grant and Adams counties were named to the Dean’s List at Eastern Washington University for spring quarter 2025, according to an announcement from the university.
One killed in Mattawa shooting
MATTAWA – At around 10 p.m. Sunday, officers from the Mattawa Police Department responded to a shooting near Hund Memorial Park, according to a Mattawa PD media release. Upon arrival, officers located an individual with apparent gunshot wounds. Medical personnel were immediately requested, and the victim was transported to a regional hospital for treatment, it said.
Grant County Fair safety measures effective, organizers say
MOSES LAKE – While there were some minor heat injuries and a few mischievous teens during the 2025 Grant County Fair as of Saturday afternoon, the event went off without any serious incidents according to fair organizers and law enforcement. In part, that’s due to added security measures taken over the past year.
