Trunk-or-treating in the Basin
MOSES LAKE — Halloween is right around the corner and fun, spooky and exciting events are coming soon to help area residents enjoy the holiday. Here are a few:
Springer's homer sends Blue Jays into World Series with 4-3 win over Mariners in Game 7 of ALCS
TORONTO (AP) — Whoa, Canada! After a huge swing by George Springer, the World Series is headed north of the border for the first time in 32 years. Springer hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Toronto Blue Jays won their first pennant since 1993 by beating the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Monday night.
Mariners head to game 7 after a win and a loss over the weekend
SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners looked poised to take the ALCS after taking a 3-2 series lead on Saturday. However, the Blue Jays stormed back in game six to tie the series. Both teams head to game seven to decide who will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
Scherzer turns back the clock and Blue Jays beat Mariners 8-2 in Game 4 to even ALCS
SEATTLE (AP) — Mad Max had nearly a month to fume, seethe and boil as he waited for his October opportunity. Finally given the ball in the playoffs, he shut down the Seattle Mariners — and his own manager, too. A fiery Scherzer turned back the clock with his vintage pitching performance and Andrés Giménez homered and drove in four runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Seattle 8-2 on Thursday to even the American League Championship Series at two games apiece.
Morris ‘Morry’ Landon
Feb. 18, 1941 — Oct. 12, 2025
Morris J. (Morry) Landon, 84, left his earthly home Oct. 12, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family after a short battle with cancer and dementia. Born Feb. 18, 1941, to Clyde & Patricia (Sheffield) Landon in Wenatchee, Washington, Morry spent his early years in Osborn, Washington while his dad Clyde worked on Grand Coulee Dam. In 1949, the family moved to Moses Lake for Clyde to work on the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. Coming to Moses Lake at that time was almost like homesteading. The family of five lived in a small RV while Clyde built a home in the Peninsula area – some streets were still only gravel.
Mariners take 2-0 ALCS lead, beat Blue Jays 10-3 as Rodríguez, Polanco and Naylor homer
TORONTO (AP) — With another triumph in Toronto, the surging Seattle Mariners moved two wins away from the team’s first World Series. Jorge Polanco and Julio Rodríguez hit three-run homers, Josh Naylor added a two-run drive and the Mariners took a 2-0 AL Championship Series lead by routing the Blue Jays 10-3 on Monday.
Raleigh homers, Polanco drives in 2 runs and Mariners beat Blue Jays 3-1 in ALCS opener
TORONTO (AP) — Bryce Miller overcame a shaky first inning and gave the tired Seattle Mariners the start they needed in the AL Championship Series opener. Miller pitched six sharp innings, Jorge Polanco hit a go-ahead single in the sixth and the Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 Sunday night as they returned to the ALCS for the first time in 24 years.
Heartache to hope
Baseball tournament supports students in memory of a life cut short
QUINCY — Some Quincy students are getting a boost with their educations because of a young man who never got to finish his own. “My son got leukemia when he was 18 years old, a senior in high school,” said Linda Guzman, president of the Mario J. Guzman Foundation. “For five years he went back and forth. He relapsed a couple of times, (had) a bone marrow transplant, but it didn't take and he lost his life Sept. 6, 2012.”
