Explosion causes Soap Lake, Ephrata outage

EPHRATA — An explosion and fire at a Soap Lake substation cut electricity in Ephrata, Soap Lake and parts of Quincy early Wednesday afternoon. The explosion and fire in Soap Lake occurred about 2 p.m. Wednesday and cut power to Soap Lake, Ephrata, Winchester and a substation east of Quincy, according to a PUD social media post. Christine Pratt, public information officer for the PUD, said Wednesday afternoon that PUD officials don’t know if the Soap Lake fire was weather-related or caused by something else.

EPHRATA — Grant County PUD customers are invited to a commission workshop at 9 a.m. Nov. 23 to discuss electrical rates and rate-setting policy. That invite followed an extensive review of commissioner ideas about rates, rate stability and meeting conduct, among other topics on Tuesday.

Royal schools celebrate end of construction

ROYAL CITY — A small but enthusiastic crowd came to the Royal School District’s newly remodeled transportation center to celebrate the completion of construction at the district’s four schools. Seventeen people attended the event, which included a slide presentation by Superintendent Roger Trail, as well as homemade cookies. The traditional gold shovel and oversized scissors were present, but not needed.
