Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid used to treat patients with chronic or severe pain when supervised by a physician. However, illegally produced and distributed fentanyl can often lead to death from overdose. It takes only a very small amount of fentanyl, the substance on the end of the pencil tip above, to cause death. A new bill being considered in the Washington Legislature would help consumers identify substances laced with fentanyl by improving access to test strips that detect the drug.
