Grant County hosts household hazardous waste collection events

MOSES LAKE — Grant County Public Works is hosting two household hazardous waste collection events this weekend. The first will be taking place May 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at Lauzier Field in Quincy and the second is May 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grant County Road District Shop in Moses Lake. 

“It’s a safe way to dispose of waste that could be hazardous,” said Joan Sieverkropp, the Solid Waste Programs Coordinator at GCPW.  

Some of the common items that will be accepted for collection include paints and stains with a limit of 30 gallons per vehicle, paint thinners, aerosols, yard chemicals, gasoline and oil with a limit of 20 gallons each, pool chemicals, corrosives, adhesives, rechargeable batteries, road flares, CFL bulbs and fluorescent tubes, high-intensity discharge lamps and vape pens with built in batteries. 

“If people put (these items) in the garbage, (things) like lithium batteries could start fires, some waste might react in the landfill,” said Sieverkropp. “It keeps sanitation workers safe and prevents contamination in our ground water.” 

This event will be free for all households in Grant County and will be restricted to households only, she said, and that businesses will be turned away.  

Items that will not be accepted at this event include empty containers, containers larger than five gallons, lead acid batteries, cylinders and propane tanks, medications, sharps, electronics and appliances, ammunition and explosives, aerial flares, incandescent and LED bulbs, asbestos, fire extinguishers and quantities over the maximum limits. 

Public works officials are requesting that waste should be brought in original, non-leaking containers. They have also advised that gasoline containers will not be returned.
