GEORGE — The Adams Road overpass on Interstate 90 east of George has been closed to traffic while Washington Department of Transportation inspectors assess its condition.

“Crews responded Wednesday morning to a report of a hole in the bridge deck and have closed the overpass until a bridge team is able to inspect the site,” according to a WSDOT press release.

Lauren Loebsack, communications director for the WSDOT North Central region, said WSDOT officials anticipate the inspection will be completed by week’s end. The closest detour route is just south of George at the intersection with the State Route 281 Spur and State Route 283.

Loebsack said any estimate of a timeframe for repairs will have to wait until after the bridge inspection. The extent of the repairs needed will determine whether or not the overpass remains closed.

“We will update when we know,” she said.

Adams Road is the third overpass on I-90 between Moses Lake and Quincy that has been determined to need repairs in the last two months. The Hansen Road overpass was closed Jan. 17 due to extensive deterioration and is scheduled to be demolished in June. The state plans to replace the Hansen bridge by December.

Road crews repaired damage to the bridge deck at Hiawatha Road Northeast in early February, although the overpass remained open. Loebsack said in an earlier interview that Hiawatha is also showing signs of deterioration.
