Grant County auditor candidates discuss experience, qualifications

EPHRATA — Three Republicans are seeking the office of Grant County Auditor: appointed incumbent Shannon Falstad and challengers Andrew Koeppen and Darci Homesley. 

To help voters compare the candidates, each was asked the same questions and given an equal opportunity to respond. Homesley did not respond to multiple requests for comment. 

For this installment, candidates were asked to describe the skills, experience and qualifications that make them the best choice for auditor and explain how their backgrounds have prepared them to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the office. 

Ballots must be postmarked or returned by Aug. 4. 

Koeppen: The Grant County Auditor's Office requires someone who can evaluate systems objectively, improve processes, solve complex problems, lead people effectively, and provide accountable leadership. 

As a telecommunications test engineer, I specialized in auditing and testing complex billing software, hardware, and E911 emergency communications systems. I was trusted to identify risks, improve processes, solve complex problems, and ensure critical systems operated accurately and reliably before they affected customers or public safety. That work required rigorous testing, attention to detail, risk prevention, and sound judgment. 

My nearly 20 years as a business owner further developed my skills in budget management, contract negotiation, operational efficiency, customer service, and leading people. As a licensed Washington real estate broker and commissioned notary public, I have also gained a direct appreciation for the importance of accurate public records, official documents, and public accountability. 

These experiences have prepared me to bring accuracy, sound judgment, accountability, effective leadership and a commitment to continuous improvement needed to serve as Grant County Auditor. 

Falstad: I previously worked in the Auditor’s office from 1996 to 2016, beginning as a Recording Deputy and later advanced to the Recording/Licensing Lead. Throughout those 20 years, I also assisted the Elections Department during every election. In 2016, I transferred to the Clerk’s Office as the Accounting Deputy, gaining a deeper understanding of the Accounting Departments processes, including budget preparation, reconciling revenue and expenditure reports and entering payables into the accounting system. With my recent appointment as Interim Auditor, I am putting my experience and knowledge into work every day.
