Meet the candidates at the Old Time Political Rally July 22 in Ephrata

EPHRATA—The Grant County Museum will host an Old Time Political Rally on Wednesday, July 22.  All Grant County-wide candidates have been invited, as well as all candidates for the 13th Legislative District and the 4th Congressional District. Each candidate will be given approximately five minutes to convince you to vote for them in the upcoming primary election. 

The public will have an opportunity to socialize with the candidates at 5 p.m. with the speeches starting at 6 p.m. until around 7:30 p.m. The candidates have been asked to furnish non-alcoholic beverages, and The American Legion will be serving hotdogs for a nominal fee. 

Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair and perhaps an umbrella for some shade. 

Mike Montaney, the Grant County Museum treasurer and M.C. of the event, said they have typically had around 100 people attending, and he expects a good turnout this year.  

"With three candidates running for sheriff. I expect a pretty good turnout for Grant County people," he said. "Plus, we've had I believe six or seven of the 11 candidates for the Fourth Congressional District respond. So, there's going to be a bunch of them there too." 

It is an outside event as is tradition, with candidates speaking from a platform from the back of a caboose. With the evening temperature approaching 100 degrees, Montaney said, people should prepare themselves appropriately.  

"We're going to have plenty of water available and stuff like that, but I mean, there's not much we can do," he said. "I'm planning on sitting in the shade of the caboose. I'm the MC also, but once I do the starting ceremony, I'm pretty much out of the way. It's just going to be one speaker right after the other until we get through them all." 

Montaney said the event is an opportunity for voters to hear what the candidates have to say about issues and gather knowledge about them. 

"The congressional district candidates, most of them are unknown in Grant County," he said. “They’re mostly from the Tri-Cities or Yakima areas.” 

The event will kick off with a rally at 5 p.m. at the museum, which is located at 736 Basin St. NW in Ephrata.
