Soap Lake Prevention Coalition’s 2026 basketball tourney deemed a success
SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Prevention Coalition's 2026 Soaring Eagles 3v3 Vape Awareness Basketball tournament was held Saturday at Smokiam Park. Ryan Boldman, the coordinator for the Soap Lake Prevention Coalition, said this year was the largest turnout since the event began in 2024.
“Each year, the tournament has continued to grow in participation, spectatorship, volunteer support and community sponsorship,” said Boldman.
The tournament for 2026 featured 21 teams with approximately 84 players participating in the event. Throughout the day, he said there were about 250 players, family members, volunteers and spectators in attendance.
Winners from the tournament include Ball Don’t Lie from the Adult Bracket, Chicken Nuggets from the Girls Bracket, MLCA from the Boys 16-18 Bracket and the Rim Reapers from the Boys 13-15 Bracket.
Boldman said players throughout the day told him that this was the best Soaring Eagles tournament that’s been held so far, which was attributed to the atmosphere, organization and competition on brought to the courts.
Volunteers had also commented that this year’s event ran smoothly, and its overall execution and success surpassed previous years, he said. This growth he feels was made possible by the continued support from the community.
“We hope that the event continues to grow and make an even greater positive impact in the years to come,” said Boldman.
In the effort to build attendance, the coalition had youth participation in the tournament completely free of charge, while adult teams at a $50 entry fee per team.
During the tourney, Boldman said the coalition distributed 100 vape awareness education bags and provided $500 worth of hot dog vouchers to Jimmy Hot Dog’s stand for players and their families to enjoy while attending the event.
“The tournament is designed to be an affordable, family-friendly community event,” he said. “Our goal is to create a fun, healthy activity that brings families together while increasing awareness about the risks of youth vaping.”
Boldman said while vaping is often perceived as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, it still presents significant health risks, especially for young people. The aerosol produced by vape devices can contain harmful chemicals and carcinogens that are inhaled deep into the lungs.
Many vape products also contain high concentrations of nicotine or cannabis, which the coordinator said increases the risk of addiction and long-term health consequences. This becomes a concern for the youth as many commercial vaping products are marketed with flavors, designs and advertising that appeal to younger audiences, despite the serious health concerns associated with youth use.
“Through this annual tournament, we hope to provide a positive community event while encouraging youth and families to make informed, healthy choices,” said Boldman. “Those interested in learning more about the risks of vaping can find valuable information through Choose You Washington and the CDC.”
The coalition coordinator said he wanted to thank the multiple community organizations and volunteers who contributed to making the event possible. Those who helped with this year’s tourney along with the Soap Lake Prevention Coalition include Grant County Fire District 7, Soap Lake Chamber of Commerce, City of Soap Lake, McKay Healthcare, Columbia Basin Hospital, Renew Behavioral Health, Columbia Basin Foundation, Keller Williams, Racho Borgo, The Fabric Patch, Kovach Architects, The Man Cave, Mark Novik, Garb and Gizmo and John and Barb Carlson.
“We also extend our gratitude to the many additional volunteers who donated their time and energy to make this year’s tournament a success,” said Boldman. “Their continued commitment helps create a healthier, stronger community for our youth and families.”
