Mavs earn two wins over Davis at home

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks (9-5) defeated the Davis Pirates 7-0 and 4-0 in a doubleheader matchup Friday. Head Coach Donnie Lindgren liked what he saw from his team in route to their two wins.  

“We played pretty good today. Defensively, our pitchers were outstanding. We had a couple clutch hits here and there; we took advantage of a couple of their mistakes, but we're going to have to hit the ball better if we want to take anything the next couple of weeks as we play two really good teams,” Lindgren said.  

Game one saw the Mavericks build a steady lead throughout the game, sealing the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Game two was a bit slower in pace, but once again the Mavericks built a lead over the course of the game while the defense held the Pirates scoreless. Strong pitching by Dagen Enquist in the final two innings sealed Moses Lake’s second win as the lights of Larson Playfield came on.  

Lindgren feels the pitching performances of Enquist, Curtis Cash, Kolby Lyons and Kanyon Klitzke showed the depth they have at the position.  

“We've got four or five guys who are throwing for us, and they've been outstanding so far,” he said. “Our defense makes the plays; they don't walk a lot of guys or anything else. Coach Baldini, our pitching coach, he does an outstanding job working with them and getting them ready to go.” 

Pitching in game one was Lyons and Klitzke. Lyons allowed one hit, two walks and struck out nine batters in five innings. Klitzke allowed one hit, zero walks and struck out three batters in two innings.  

Jacoby Mugnos, Jonathan Purcell, Jacoby Fulbright and Noah Hernandez got home for the Mavericks in the first game. Making an impact on offense was Maddox Herrud with two hits and three RBIs.  

“His play this year has just been outstanding. In practice, he works super hard. He's just gotten better in the fall, in the winter, he's put the time in and everything else, and it really showed early this year. In fact, he was named a captain about two weeks ago. He earned it,” Lindgren said.  

The Mavericks carried their momentum on the pitching mound into game two. Cash allowed just two hits, zero walks and struck out three batters in five innings. Enquist wrapped things up for two innings, allowing three hits, zero runs, one walk and struck out three more batters to seal the 4-0 win. 

Getting home in game two were Purcell, Fulbright, Herrud and Jeremiah Olson.  

The Mavericks return to Larson Tuesday when they host West Valley at 5 p.m. Like many coaches across the Basin, Lindgren is hopeful that his team is beginning to peak at the right time as the end of the regular season nears.  

“We had a tough week last week, and I take the blame for last couple losses on that, but these guys are ready to go, and we're hoping to continue. Our defense is there, our pitching is there... now we just got to come through with our bats, with clutch hits and the little things. We're hoping we're peaking and going to be playing the best baseball we've played yet,” Lindgren said.
