MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks boys tennis team earned a shutout victory, defeating the Sunnyside Grizzlies 7-0 at home. The Mavs prepare for a tough week ahead as they head into the final matchups of the regular season.

“They had some really great matches,” said Mavs Head Coach Mark Thompson.

The boys had a strong performance overall with Moses Lake senior Jacob Duvall in second singles being the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sunnyside’s Jared Pedreso.

“It went pretty smooth,” said Duvall. “I had a little bit of a shoulder problem, so I was trying to play a little slower, but I think it went pretty well for me.”

He said this matchup was a good reminder of the importance of always moving his feet and being ready for any hit that could come his way. As the season progresses, the senior is working towards having a strong performance in the upcoming Inland Empire tournament and districts.

“It’s been a wild ride so far, just figuring out that this is kind of my last season of playing competitive tennis like this and just trying to take it all in and trying to make the best of it,” said Duvall.

Moses Lake continued their dominance on the boys singles side with swift wins from Ollie Madsen earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory and Weston Hill defeating his opponent, 6-1, 6-0.

The closest matchup came from first singles between Sam Molitor, a senior from the Mavs, taking on Cane Sanchez from Sunnyside. Molitor came out strong earning a 6-0 win over his opponent but fell in a tiebreaker during the second which sent the two into a third set. In the final set, Molitor closed things out 6-3 to claim the victory.

“We went to Sunnyside a few weeks ago, (Molitor) lost in a third set to the guy he played and (Wednesday) he won in the third set against the guy,” said Thompson. “It was kind of a battle, and he knew that battle was coming up.”

Boys doubles maintained their success for the Mavs as Sean Brumet and Thomas Bowen took a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory in first doubles and Kysen Chavez and Brayden Thacker claimed a shutout 6-0, 6-0 victory in third doubles. The second doubles team of Emmett Sisney and Jeremiah Acevedo had a closer matchup, but put away both sets 6-4, 6-2, giving Moses Lake a full team victory.

Following the team victory against Sunnyside, the Mavs have a few days to get prepared before they face tough competition against the top two Big 9 teams, Wenatchee and West Valley. Moses Lake then heads to Spokane to compete in the Inland Empire tournament where they will have 20 players competing in 13 different locations.

“The boys have to look forward to the tough matches coming ahead because they have a really good chance of taking second in the league,” said Thompson.

The Mavs remain home to play Wenatchee Tuesday at 3 p.m. before heading on the road to West Valley Wednesday at 3 p.m. The team then heads to the Inland Empire tournament running April 24-25.
