Ephrata’s new booster pump station finished

EPHRATA — City officials announced Wednesday that the long-awaited Booster Pump Station located at B Street and Division is now operational. This is part of a comprehensive water system improvement initiative, which also includes enhancements to the city’s water tower infrastructure. 

The new booster pump's primary role is to increase water pressure and ensure an adequate flow across the city, a concern that has long been addressed by city planners.  

“The booster pump is part of a larger initiative that includes the water tower in the Northeast section of town. With this pump installed, we can store water on both sides of town and manage it more effectively in case of issues,” City Administrator Ray Towry said.  

During the initial testing phase, crews reported that the pump successfully moved 4,500 gallons of water per minute. However, this vigorous flow disturbed naturally occurring sediment within existing water lines, resulting in temporary discoloration of tap water for residents in some areas, particularly on the southeast and northeast hills. 

Towry reassured residents that there is no water emergency despite the discolored water. 

“Anytime you make changes to the water flow, sediment that has settled can be disturbed. Though the water may not look clear, it is still chlorinated according to state standards, ensuring it is safe for consumption,” he said.  

City crews are actively flushing the system to alleviate the discoloration, and Towry advised residents to assist by running outdoor garden hoses for a few minutes to help expedite the process.  

The city's investment in this water infrastructure project is anticipated to bring about significant operational improvements.  

“This installation allows us to respond more effectively during emergencies,” Towry said. “For instance, if an unexpected issue arises in one area of town, we can isolate that section while rerouting resources from the other side.” 

In addition, Towry mentioned that progress on the accompanying water tower is on schedule, with the final stages of painting underway.  

“We are optimistic that we will complete these projects under budget, which significantly benefits the community,” he said.
