Community learning centers coming to Othello schools

OTHELLO — The Othello School District will be implementing new before-school and after-school programs for elementary and middle school students with the help of a five-year, $2.5 million federal grant. Josh Meek, OSD executive director of teaching and learning, said the community learning centers will start in January 2026. 

“It gives kids a safe, structured place to go before and after school,” Meek said.  

The programs offered at the learning centers will be free of charge to students and families. There's also a summer component, Meek said. The grant will provide $500,000 per year.  

Community learning center sites will be set up at Hiawatha and Scootney Springs elementaries and McFarland Middle School. Qualifying children from other OSD elementary schools can also attend. 

While there’s structure, there’s no set routine, Meek said. 

“Every day will be a little bit different,” he said. “It really is meant to meet the kids where they’re at.” 

Children who need a little help will receive extra tutoring. Additional education opportunities will be part of the program, focusing on science, math and engineering.  

“Part of it is a little bit of fun,” Meek said, with games and other activities spread throughout. “It really is a blend of a lot of different things.” 

Meek said transportation for children will be provided. 

District officials are working on hiring staff, Meek said, with the goal of starting the program sometime in January. A starting date will be announced.
