EWU men’s basketball launches 'Read Like an Eagle' program

CHENEY — Eastern Washington University Men's Basketball has taken its passion for teamwork and learning beyond the court with the launch of Read Like an Eagle, a community outreach program designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading among elementary students across the Spokane and Cheney school districts.
This fall, the Eagles visited 15 elementary schools, connecting with more than 7,000 students through assemblies and classroom visits. During each stop, players and coaches shared personal stories about how reading has impacted their academic and athletic journeys, emphasizing perseverance, discipline and curiosity as essential skills for success both on and off the court.
Following the assemblies, team members joined classrooms to read alongside students, reinforcing the message that leadership begins with learning.
"Our players understand the power of education and the doors reading can open," said head coach Dan Monson. "Read Like an Eagle gives us a chance to give back, encourage young students, and remind them that great things start with curiosity and hard work."
To keep the energy alive, EWU Men's Basketball has issued a challenge to every participating student: if they meet the reading goals set by their teachers, they'll earn a free ticket to an upcoming EWU Men's Basketball home game, where they'll be recognized on the court and receive a special prize.
The three Read Like an Eagle Celebration Games will take place on:
• Dec. 6 vs. Kansas City
• Jan. 10 vs. Montana
• Feb. 14 vs. Weber State
Read Like an Eagle is more than a literacy program — it's a partnership between EWU and the communities it serves. By connecting student-athletes with young readers, the initiative fosters excitement for education, strengthens community ties, and reinforces the university's ongoing commitment to engagement and growth.
"We want every student we meet to see that reading is a foundation for success," said Monson. "If we can spark that excitement early, we're helping build leaders for the future."
