Mavs continue win streak on Senior Night

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks Football team (8-0) tacked on another victory to their season Friday night when they hosted West Valley and won 72-7. The Mavs sit on top of the Big 9 after completing their final home game of the regular season. 

“We played Mavericks football and we really united as a team,” said Mavs senior running back Carson Huberdeau. “From the first game to this game, we’ve really come together as a team.” 

The Mavs got off to a hot start, putting up 28 points in the first quarter and following that up with 37 in the second quarter. Throughout the first half, the Mavs defense held West Valley scoreless. 

In the second half, the Mavs scored early again in the third quarter to put their lead up to 72-0, with the Mavs' defense remaining dominant in the second half. West Valley would finally score in the final quarter, but it would not be enough and the Mavericks would remain undefeated. 

“We just executed offense, defense and special teams,” said Mavs senior quarterback Brady Jay. “Just a clean game.” 

Jay said the team has been continuing to improve throughout the season, and that was on full display during Friday night’s game. This is something he said the team will do as they head into the final game of the season this week and into the postseason the following week.  

“We’ve got one more week, so we’re going to heal that week,” he said. “I’m feeling good. Hopefully, we can host a playoff game and then get past the first round, that’s the big goal.” 

Huberdeau said he is ready for the weeks ahead as they head into the final game of the regular season. In preparation for the coming week, the Mavs are looking to smooth out their play on the field. 

“I do believe we’ll have a good playoff run,” he said. “I honestly think we’re a state championship team.” 

Mavs head coach Brett Jay said this was a good game for the offense to get back on the field and rolling again after facing a tough Eastmont defense the week prior. He said they got multiple players with good touches on the ball, with Brady Jay distributing well and the offensive line giving him plenty of time to work with. 

On defense, the Mavs did what they’ve been doing all season and the special teams once again had a great night as the team was effective in all three phases of the game, said Jay. 

The mindset of the Mavs coming into this game was to take the matchup as if it were to make them 1-0, he said. This was also a good moment for the seniors to earn a big game for their senior night as a landmark for where they are at in their careers. 

“These seniors have put in so much time,” said Jay. “You just don’t realize it unless you’re there with them and for four years, year-round, lifting, spring stuff, summer, for them to get this moment out here, it’s great.” 

With this game marking the final home game of the regular season, the Mavs seniors were recognized for the efforts they put in throughout their careers. Jay said even after the game that it still hasn’t fully sunk in yet.  

For Huberdeau, he said it is exciting for him to be at this point in his career and appreciates all of the teammates that have been with him since the beginning. 

“I couldn’t be here without my other seniors; we’ve been playing together since we were in fifth grade,” he said. “It’s really a good team chemistry, it’s awesome.” 

As the Mavs move forward into the rest of the season, Jay said the team will focus on building themselves up even more and taking each matchup as it comes. 

“We’re going to finish strong with playing (Davis) and then we’ll start down that postseason,” he said. “We definitely want to finish the right way, focus on Davis, and put our best foot forward there.” 

The Mavs will finish the regular season on the road as they head to Davis on Friday at 7 p.m.
