Lions best Devils

MOSES LAKE – Moses Lake Christian Academy/Christian Covenant School Lions (8-5) earned a significant 3-0 victory at home over the Wilson Creek Devils (5-10). This win now ties the Lions with Entiat for third in the Central Washington B conference as the team heads into the final three games of the season. 

“I thought it was pretty good,” said Lions player Shay Kast, “We had a really good game (Wednesday) against Pateros, and I think we carried it over into (Thursday).” 

The Lions started the game off strong, gaining an early lead over the Devils in the first set and maintaining that lead throughout to win 25-18. The Lions carried this momentum into the second set to win 25-12. 

Coming into the third set, the Devils kept the game much closer, with the two teams holding a close point differential throughout. Towards the end of the set, the Lions would pull ahead and win 25-19 to end the match 3-0. 

Kast said the team has done a great job passing and hitting so far this season, which has brought about much of their success. This is what led to their success both against Pateros and the Devils. 

“I feel like once we get a good pass and a good set, the hitters do a good job at putting it away,” she said.  

Lions head coach Dean Spurbeck said the team played well in the matchup and has been working on keeping their energy high and playing their best in every set. With this, the Lions have been getting more hitters involved on offense and working to get their middles and right side set in as much as their outsides. 

Spurbeck said the Lions got to play their entire team against the Devils, which allowed some of the younger girls on the team to play late in the season. 

“That was a good experience for them, and they actually did good,” he said. 

The Lions are now looking forward to their final three games of the season, with the last two being against the two top teams in the league, Soap Lake and Waterville-Mansfield. Spurbeck said the main goal for the team at this point in the season is to remain consistent. 

“Playing good volleyball where we’ll pass it and set it, set it and spike it,” he said.  

Kast said the team is going to put some work into their communication and teamwork moving into these last few games of the regular season, as they prepare for the upcoming postseason, and that she is feeling good about where the team is headed.  

“I think our next two games are big games for us,” she said. “We need to win, and I feel like if we play together, we have a really good chance at winning.” 

The Devils will finish their season on the road with a game tonight against Bridgeport at 5 p.m. and a game tomorrow against Pateros at 6 p.m.  

The Lions played against Cascade Christian Academy on Saturday; the results of that game were unavailable at the time of press. Their next game will be on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m., where they will face the Soap Lake Eagles.
