ArtGarden Pottery casts a spell with 'I Smell Pottery Painting' event

MOSES LAKE – Friday night, ArtGarden Pottery, a ceramics studio owned by Laura Mayer, transformed into a whimsical world of witches, paint and creativity as it hosted the first of two “I Smell Pottery Painting” events in celebration of Halloween.  

A whimsical nod to the ghoulish fun of “Hocus Pocus,” the event brought together community members in a night filled with artistic expression, laughter and a sprinkle of magic. 

Dressed in an enchanting ensemble evoking the iconic Sanderson Sisters from the cult classic film, Mayer joined her friends Lisa Brown and Lori Munson in matching costumes, embodying the witchy charm that has become synonymous with the Halloween season.  

“I just love Halloween,” Mayer said. “It’s a perfect kickoff for the holiday season, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than through art and friendship.” 

The event saw participants transforming their pottery projects into unique treasures of their own design, channeling their inner artisans with the guidance of Mayer and her talented team.  

“We focus on helping everyone bring their creative visions to life,” Mayer said, “It’s not just about pottery; it’s a gathering place for friends and a place to meet new ones.” 

In an atmosphere that buzzed with energy and creativity, guests indulged in both the joys of painting and the festive ambiance of Halloween. With a variety of pottery pieces available for decoration, participants were given full rein to express themselves artistically, bringing their own witchy fantasies to life.  

“I always tell people, the experience is the core part of what we offer here,” Mayer said. “A week later, you come back to pick up your piece, and that’s just the icing on the cake.” 

As the evening wore on, Mayer expressed gratitude for the strong support she has received from the Moses Lake community over the years.  

“I’ve been here for 15 years, and it really is amazing to see how people continue to come back. They treat this space like home,” she said. “We want everyone to come downtown, shop local, and see what we have to offer.” 

In addition to the ghoulish festivities of the evening, Mayer also highlighted upcoming events, including more “Hocus Pocus” nights, and the introduction of “naughty pottery” classes, which will be 18+ and include templates with “bad words” slated for early next year. Mayer will also be bringing back wheel classes, where customers can learn how to throw pottery.   

“We have plans to hold classes again, and we want to expand our offerings to include a wider variety of creative experiences,” she said. 

There are also walk-in hours for people to paint Thursday from noon to 6 p.m., Friday from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. 

While participants crafted their own masterpieces, Mayer emphasized the therapeutic aspect of artistic expression.  

“I often have people come in and say they need some ‘art therapy,’” Mayer said. “This is a place where you can just relax, unwind, and escape the stresses of life. I love being able to provide that for our community.” 

As witches and wizards painted potions and broomsticks on their pottery, the evening captured the essence of community through creativity and shared experiences. Mayer's passion for art and her dedication to fostering a supportive space for all ages became evident as the night progressed. 

The second “I Smell Pottery Painting” event is scheduled for Oct. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m., promising even more fun, creativity, and camaraderie.  

“It’s not just about making pottery; it’s about making memories,” Mayer said. “I can’t wait to see everyone again next week.”
