Discover hidden treasures at the Moses Lake museum event

MOSES LAKE – The City of Moses Lake Museum & Art Center has announced a special presentation by Humanities Washington speaker Harriet Baskas, scheduled for Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center Auditorium, located at 401 S. Balsam St.  

This event, suitable for audiences of all ages and free of charge, will delve into the fascinating world of museum artifacts that remain unseen in back rooms and basements. 

Baskas, the author of several books, including "Hidden Treasures: What Museums Can’t or Won’t Show You," will explore the reasons behind the limited display of museum collections. With most institutions exhibiting only a fraction of their holdings — often cited as due to space constraints — she will uncover the cultural, historical, and even superstitious factors that contribute to the concealment of certain items. 

Participants will encounter an eclectic array of hidden artifacts, such as Bing Crosby’s toupées and a 150-year-old pickle from a museum in Lynden. This presentation promises to challenge perceptions of what constitutes a museum collection and broaden appreciation for the myriad stories held within these treasured spaces.
