Mavs dominate in homecoming game

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks (5-0) dominated the field for their homecoming game against Eisenhower on Friday, earning a 70-0 victory. The Mavs remain undefeated this season and sit at the top of the Big 9 conference. 

“It was a great team win, everybody got in there and got a piece of them,” said Mavs defensive end Treyson Knowles.  

The Mavs got off to a strong start in the first half, holding down Ike on defense and putting up a 28-0 lead. The team continued this momentum into the second quarter, where they put up another four touchdowns, with one being a strip fumble forced by Knowles on Ike’s 40-yard line. 

“Everybody did their job on that play, and it led to opportunities. I loved it,” said Knowles. 

In the third quarter, the Mavs scored once agai,n putting the score up to 63. The Mavs contained Ike’s offensive push throughout the final two quarters and with another Mavs touchdown at the end of the fourth, they ended the game 70-0. 

Coming out of the game, Mavs running back Elijah Burns said that the team did a great job executing their game plan. He said their greatest strength as a team has been how well the players and coaching staff work together. 

Mavs quarterback Brady Jay said that the team has shown solid performance on all sides of the ball this season and has worked hard to get to where they are.  

“It’s kind of just competing against ourselves at practice every day and just coming out and doing our best,” he said.  

Mavs head coach Brett Jay said this game was overall a good team win as the team scored on every possession, had the defensive score from Knowles, and prevented their opponent from scoring for a second week in a row.  

One highlight from the game early on that Brett said he was particularly impressed by the performance from the Mavs’ special teams coached by Donnie Lindgren. The special teams both kept Ike downfield and made huge plays when they received the kickoff. 

With this game being their homecoming game, he said, earning this win is always an important milestone for the school. 

“The weekend starts with this game, so we want to take care of our end of it,” said Brett. “There’s a lot of distractions during homecoming week, so we were working on keeping our focus on the game and all that good stuff.” 

As the team heads into the second half of the season, the coach said that the team is going to be looking even better going forward as they will have a few players returning to the roster starting next week.  

Brett said as the season continues, he plans on having the players stay focused on developing themselves each week and get back to work first thing Monday morning.  

The Mavs players said they will continue to look at the season one day at a time, but are also feeling confident in how they are developing as they move forward. 

“I’m feeling good, I feel like we’re going to go all the way,” said Burns. “I’m excited for the future.” 

The Mavs’ next game will be on the road Friday, where they will face off against Post Falls High School at 7 p.m.
