Beatrice Moncada Sampson

| May 8, 2025 1:55 PM

It is with mournful hearts that we announce the passing of Beatrice (Bea) Moncada Sampson, 64, on May 4, 2025.

Bea endured a long and courageous battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Bea’s warmth, prayerful heart, and unwavering love for her family defined her life. She was a woman of deep strength and quiet resilience with a smile that could light up the room.

In September of 1960, Bea was born to Ramon and Aurora Moncada in Crystal City, Texas. She was one of 13 children. Her entire life she valued the love and relationships of her brothers and sisters. All her siblings had children, which translated to numerous nephews and nieces. Family was not just around on holidays; she enjoyed spending time with her family members every day. She especially enjoyed joking with the children and making them laugh.

In her late teen years, she married Merce Rocha and had two daughters, Denise and Cristie. The couple later divorced. Her youngest daughter, Bernadette was born 10 years later. Her family continued to grow, first with her daughter Denise getting married, followed by the addition of her first grandson, Cameron. It expanded further with her marrying James Sampson and Cristie getting married and having two grandsons, Gavin and Noah. Her only granddaughter, Autumn, was born to Bernadette two years ago and would just light up Bea’s face every time she saw her.

Bea enjoyed hiking, camping, and four-wheeling out at the Sand Dunes. Bea especially LOVED being a grandmother. She would spoil her grandkids with trips to the Dollar Tree and plenty of sugary treats. We also have videos upon videos that she made of her grandchildren. She would film all their school activities, birthdays, sports games, etc.

Bea had a major conversion of heart in her 40s. Her life was a testament of a “rescue story.” She was liberated in Christ and found much peace through her faith. She had always prayed the rosary, but her prayer life took on a new meaning after this period. She felt her sins were bigger than God’s mercy and did not feel worthy of His grace, so while rescued she did not feel worthy until she was introduced to the Divine Mercy Chaplet. This devotion helped her to accept God’s mercy and grace. Her trust in God grew. Every day at 3 p.m., she would turn on the local Catholic radio station and pray/sing along with the Chaplet as she waited in the parent pick-up line to pick up her grandsons from school.

In Bea’s mid-50s, she received a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s which greatly changed her life. One suggestion from the doctors was to engage in creative activities to keep the brain active. We started holding craft and paint nights. We invited family and friends to come over and paint a themed canvas that Denise prepared. She has always loved painting and making ceramics, so this was a great way to not only engage her brain but also be around people.

There is a quote that Avalon posted on Facebook that reads, “There is one thing Alzheimer’s cannot take away, and that is love. Love is not a memory — it’s a feeling that resides in the heart and soul.”

As her Alzheimer’s progressed, many parts of the Bea we knew changed, but she never stopped responding to being treated with kindness and love.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Adult Family Home and Dr. Hardy for taking great care of Bea.

Grandma Bea will be missed beyond words!
