Tigers fall to Selah 1-6 in first league game of ‘25

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers fell to Selah on Tuesday night 1-6 in their first league game of the year.
“(Selah is) perennially one of the top teams in our league,” said Tigers head baseball coach David Tempel. “Had a couple of innings where we gave them some freebies in terms of walks ... and those tend to come around to hurt you.”
Landen Stephens started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched three innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two. Ryder Mann followed, surrendering two earned runs and striking out six.
The Tigers batted well, outhitting Selah 7-5. Elijah Davis and Cooper Vasquez got two hits apiece and Tavone Mantese, Clayton Wolther and Caleb Froewiss added singles. Wolther had the only RBI for the Tigers when he hit a single to right field, scoring Vasquez from second base in the third inning, said Tempel.
“It was a really strong team effort, and we had a number of guys who just came up in big spots,” he said. “Really, we are a team of guys who are willing to do what it takes for the next guy to do well.”
The big takeaway from this game for the Tigers is trusting the process and slowing the game down to one pitch at a time, Tempel said.
“Understanding that if your process is good, the results will come,” he said. “They might not come when you want them to, but the results will come.”
The Tigers' next game will be on the road for a league doubleheader against Grandview on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
