Othello goes 1-1 against Kennewick

OTHELLO – The Othello Huskies played in a doubleheader Friday night against the Kennewick Lions losing their first game 0-14 and winning their second 7-6.  

“We did really good hitting today,” said Huskies head coach Ceci Rodriguez. “We’ve been working on it and this last game it really showed.”  

While the team struggled to find footing in their first game, they were able to bounce back in their second game with an early lead. The leadership shown by the three seniors on the team played a major role in their success in the second game, said Rodriguez 

Senior Emi Pruneda (14) was four for four on hitting with two runs and one RBI. Alizay Pruneda (17) was able to go two for four with 3 RBIs and one run and Kiana Salazar (9) had two hits going two for three. 

The Huskies also had a great pitching game with Lovie Franco (5) having a very successful first four innings, getting three strikeouts, allowing five hits and only one score. 

“Lovie came out and I don’t even think she pitched last year,” said Rodriguez. 

The game got tighter towards the end as the Lions came back from trailing 7-3 at the start of the fifth inning to getting 7-6 toward the end of the sixth. The game eventually had to be called due to darkness giving the Huskies the win over the Lions. 

“There was no light you could barely even see out there,” said the coach. “I kind of just wanted to see if our girls could handle these kinds of situations.” 

Looking forward to upcoming games, the team will try to emulate the energy that they were able to bring into their second game. They will still be focusing on the fundamentals such as catching and hitting on top of everything, according to Rodriguez.  

“Our seniors, they do pretty good on hitting the ball, fielding and those mechanicals,” said Rodriquez. “A lot of these girls are new, so they need to learn how to catch fly balls out there.” 

Othello next plays Royal City this afternoon at 5 p.m.  

    Emi Pruneda hit 4 for 4 on the night with 2 runs and one RBI.
  

    It was a closer second game for the Huskies and they were able to earn the win at home.
