Lions play for chance to advance at 1B state tourney

MOSES LAKE — The first round of state tournament play was one of those games for the Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School boys basketball team. The Lions lost a hard-fought 48-43 defensive battle to Lummi Nation School on Feb. 28.
“The boys played hard, but sometimes the ball just doesn’t roll your way,” Ferguson said. “We showed up and we played a heck of game, but the ball just didn’t bounce our way.”
The Lions defeated Lummi Nation to take fourth place at the 2024 Class 1B tournament.
With the loss, MLCA/CCS will play Muckleshoot Tribal School at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Spokane Arena. The winner moves to the quarterfinals; the loser goes home.
Ferguson said that while it was a tough loss, MLCA/CCS is not out of contention.
“(We) remind the boys that it’s not over and you can still win the state championship,” he said. “The goal is still there, and we’ve been here before. We know what we need to do and how we need to do it.”
In addition to their fourth-place finish in 2024, the Lions took sixth place in 2022.
Muckleshoot Tribal School resembles Lummi Nation School, Ferguson said.
“It’ll be a similar playing style. So we’re really going to have to show up and get the job done,” he said.
