Diamondbacks dominate three game series over Mariners

PHOENIX (AP) — On Tuesday, Gabriel Moreno hit a three-run homer, Corbin Carroll added a pair of triples and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Seattle Mariners 10-3 on Tuesday night.

The D-backs have won the first two games of the series and will go for the sweep on Wednesday.

Arizona scored five runs in the sixth inning off righty Trent Thornton to push their lead to 9-2. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. started the inning with a single, Pavin Smith walked and Moreno followed with a line drive shot into the left field seats for his fifth homer of the season.

Alek Thomas reached base four times on a walk, two singles and a solo homer. He also had a stolen base and scored four times. Gurriel added a solo homer and Carroll took over the major league triples lead with eight.

Brandon Pfaadt (8-4) threw five scoreless innings before giving up back-to-back homers to Randy Arozarena and Rowdy Tellez beginning the sixth, cutting the D-backs' advantage to 4-2. That ended Pfaadt's night.

Seattle's Logan Evans (3-2) gave up four runs, seven hits and two walks over five innings. The right-hander struck out five.

Tellez, Julio Rodriguez, Cole Young and Jorge Polanco all had two hits.

Both teams had stellar defensive plays in the early innings.

Arozarena, playing left field, threw out Perdomo at home in the first thanks to an excellent scoop on a tricky hop and then an accurate throw. Gurriel countered in third, robbing Cal Raleigh of an extra-base hit — and potentially a homer — when he made a leaping catch at the left field wall.

The game was still tight in the sixth when Tayler Scott — making his D-backs debut — recorded three outs to stop Seattle's rally.

Carroll has eight triples this season to lead the majors. He's the only player in D-backs history to have multiple games with two triples.

The D-backs send LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (1-3, 6.70 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday while the Mariners counter with RHP Bryan Woo (3-5, 3.07).

Wednesday's Game

Eugenio Suárez hit a go-ahead grand slam, Eduardo Rodriguez pitched into the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks swept a three-game series from the Seattle Mariners with a 5-2 win on Wednesday.

Arizona trailed 2-0 after five innings but scored five runs in the sixth for a second straight game to take control.

Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte led off the sixth with back-to-back singles, Josh Naylor walked with one out and then Suárez launched a slider 410 feet off Bryan Woo (5-4) into the left-center seats to give the D-backs a 4-2 lead.

It was Suárez’s third grand slam of the season. Pavin Smith added a solo homer later in the inning for a 5-2 advantage.

Rodriguez (2-3) matched his second-longest outing of the season, giving up two runs over 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander came into the game with a 6.70 ERA, but navigated the Mariners' lineup without much trouble, surrendering six hits and a walk while striking out five.

Woo gave up five runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out three.

Seattle's Julio Rodríguez had three hits and Donovan Solano hit a solo homer.

Arizona improved to 34-34 for the season and will try to go over .500 for the first time since May 23 when they host the Padres on Friday. The Mariners dropped to 33-34.

The Mariners put two runners on in the seventh, but D-backs reliever Juan Morillo coaxed a double-play ball from Miles Mastrobuoni to end the threat.

Suárez has 295 career homers, pushing him to third among Venezuelan-born players in big league history, passing Magglio Ordóñez's mark of 294. Miguel Cabrera had 511 homers and Andrés Galarraga had 399.

The Mariners host the Guardians and RHP Gavin Williams (5-3, 3.86 ERA) on Friday night.
