Orlando G. Ruiz, 69, a longtime resident of Moses Lake, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, May 29, 2025.

Orlando “Londy” was born Nov. 25, 1955, in Moses Lake, Wash., to Leo and Leonor Ruiz. He was raised and educated in Moses Lake, attending Chief Moses Junior High and graduating from Moses Lake High School in 1974.

From a young age, Orlando and his brothers helped their father grow and sell watermelons. He was also deeply aware of social injustices, participating in farmworker protests to stand up for fair wages and workers’ rights. He remained a man of principle throughout his life, never afraid to speak out for what he believed was right.

Following high school, Orlando began his career at the Hanford Nuclear Facility before relocating to Gilroy, Calif., where he furthered his education in civil engineering. He went on to work for Kier & Wright Civil Engineers and Surveyors, where he proudly dedicated over 35 years of service. He retired and came home to Moses Lake in 2007.

Orlando had a lifelong passion for learning, particularly history, and enjoyed traveling and playing golf. He also had a deep appreciation for gardening, grilling during summer, and spending quality time with family and friends. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he cherished teaching and sharing new experiences with his family

He was a passionate sports fan and could always be found cheering on his favorite teams — the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners. He was always watching golf.

Orlando was known for his gift of gab and love of storytelling. Whether quoting his favorite lines from war movies and comedies, sharing a well-worn joke or reflecting on history, he had a way of captivating everyone within earshot. He enjoyed good food, '70s rock and country music and could often be heard singing or humming along to classic hits.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Leonor Ruiz; his brothers, Rudy, Juan (Paco), Freddie, Victor and Gilbert (Pico); and his grandson, Kriss.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Viola “Bo” Ruiz; his daughter, Jazmine; his granddaughter, Samantha; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him deeply.

Orlando left a lasting legacy through his kindness, humor, strength and integrity. His presence lit up every room, and his memory will live on through the countless stories and laughter he inspired. His family will continue to quote his favorite lines and carry forward his love for life.

A celebration of Orlando’s life will be held at Kayser’s Chapel of Memories on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 1 p.m.
