Moses Lake Co-Ed softball league begins

MOSES LAKE – Moses Lake’s Co-Ed adult softball league began this week with the first games taking place Tuesday at Paul Lauzier Athletic Complex. The league is hosted by Moses Lake Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. 

“Just to provide a recreational softball league for people in the community,” said Felicia Laird, recreation supervisor of athletics with the City of Moses Lake. “Something fun to do in the summer. We have a couple other adult sports leagues, but they’re in the winter, so we were looking to offer something during the summer.” 

This year, the softball league had 11 teams sign up, which in the past has reached up to 15 teams. These teams are made up of both men and women aged 18 and up, but Laird said that minors may also participate with parent or guardian permission. 

The games will be split between lower and upper divisions, much like what was used in the men’s softball league. Laird said there are six teams in the lower division and five teams in the upper division this season. 

“Teams can register in with their preferred division and then we’ll also place them based on previous season performance,” she said. “If they were pretty successful and seems like they’d compete at a higher level we’ll move them up and kind of evaluate it that way.” 

This year’s Lower Division teams consist of the Shenanigans, Benchwarmers, Pitch Please, SunSplash Sluggers, Silver Tigers and Tailgaters. The Upper Division teams are the Average Joes, Ohana, One Love, LA Auto/Los Borrachos and Late Start. 

Lower Division teams will play doubleheaders at 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Upper Division teams play three games every Thursday with games starting at 6:30, 7:45 and 9 p.m. All games will take place at the Paul Lauzier Athletic Complex. 

Games last until August 28, when the season will end with a playoff tournament to determine the champions of each division. 

The league has existed for a few years now, and Laird said she wants to keep it going for as long as possible. She highlighted that it’s important to have a recreational activity for adults to participate in and look forward to, while getting them outside and involved in community activities. 

“It’s just important to keep it going and utilize the parks and facilities that we have,” she said. “Sometimes (the parks are) just utilized for teams out of town or youth and I think this is good to offer something for the adults.” 

The first games for the lower division began Tuesday evening, and the first games for the upper division will begin today at 7:15 p.m. at Paul Lauzier Athletic Complex.
